Perway Sidings

In the first instance, perway machines are stored in any convenient siding, such as goods sidings.

Many of these goods sidings have closed in recent decades, requiring dedicate Perway Sidings to be built at convenient places.

On the single line from Junee to Albury, several crossing loops no longer have any sidings.

South of the border between Albury and Melbourne, some/most/all crossing loops have Cripple Sidings at each end, which could be used to stow perway machines.

Prior to duplication of the Sutherland-Cronulla line, there was a double ended goods siding. This was electrified and converted to a turnback siding. With that duplication, the lead to that siding was upgraded, becoming the Up Branch, and a new turnout laid connecting about half of the former siding as a Perway siding. On flaw in the design is that track centres between the PW Siding and the Down Main is IIRC a narrow 3.66m, instead of a safer say 5.2m including a barrier fence..

At St Leonards, part of the old Up Goods Siding(s) have be shortened as a PW siding connecting to the Up Shore. The crossover between the Up and Down Shore was partially and then completely removed, so the access from the PWS to the Down Shore must be via North Sydney or Chatswood.

At Cowan, the Up Engines Siding at the North End was extended behind the Up platform to form a Perway siding. This siding splits in two, and as far as can be told, the track centres are very narrow.

According to other threads, Campbelltown now has a Perway siding formed as a northwards extension of the Down Refuge Loop.

Epping used to have a Perway Siding formed as an extension of the IIRC catchpoints at the end of the Down North Suburban. This was abolished to make way for the ECRL.

Railpagers are invited to add more examples.

Epping also has a Down Siding south of the station, perhaps an old Down Refuge Siding, which could probably be used as a perway siding.

Hornsby now has a dedicated and non-electrified perway siding on the Down Side of the new Down Refuge line. The siding seems to have another siding off it.

The North Coast would be full of old good sidings still booked in like Bulliac.
The Hanbury refuge loop near Warabrook was made a siding about 2006 when they removed 125 points and the stock siding to become a dead end, they stow machines there once in a while.

One might mention that St Marys has a siding on the up side, leading to a factory where track machines are made, and probably repaired as well. This siding is on the Sydney end of the station.

Too numerous, last time I was at Aberdeen it was booked out of use, the Scone stock siding is still in use, so is Gunnedah stock siding, Curlewis silo siding dead end has been used for TM storage, Maitland and Telarah yards are used for TM storage.
Singleton and Muswellbrook shunting necks are also used, not to mention elcom siding at Newdell jct.

North Strathfield probably has the largest complex of perway sidings. Three of the old Down Sidings have been retained for track machine use, include those machines used for OHW maintenance. Note that these sidings inside the triangle are right next to a large Electrical Branch substation and depot.

These sidings have power points and signals connecting to the running lines.

BTW, RP Spell Checker reports an operational error, not any spelling errors.

There are two up sidings remaining at Wyong that connect to the north end of the Up Refuge Loop. I think one is a goods siding and the other Perway. Track machines have often been stored there, and a relatively long goods train (by the standards of yesteryear) can be put away in the Up Refuge + one of the up sidings if necessary, although this rarely happens.

1500m long trains can be refuged one at a time on the Up or Down lines and be overtaken by the Down or Up Mains, like Yass, Harden, Cootamundra.

This is a common occurrence at Wyong, although I wouldn't call it "refuging" in the traditional sense because passing movements with this setup obstruct both main lines (and sometimes even delay other trains, even at a "country" or non-metropolitan location like Wyong).

Track machines have been stabled in sidings on the up and down at Morisset, Hamilton, and on the up at Awaba; and before the infrastructure was removed, at Epping, Ourimbah and Wyee.

Meeks Road still has a siding that was formerly used to repair oil tankers.

Rockdale has a siding and crossover connected to the Up and Down Illa Locals lines, but no connection to the Illawarra (Main) lines.

Hurstville has a turnback siding that might be usable.

Mortdale MC still has IIRC one non-electrified siding that could be used.

Meeks road has the shunting neck near the water board crossing and 3 (south)sidings where the old tanker repairs were done(Cheps) all able to stable machines in.
Each Rockdale siding has an additional set of points from Local to Main but not between up and down.
Have stabled at Hurstville before.
The only time i have stabled a machine in Mortdale was for a shift change during a possession.
If anyone is interested i can make a list of known sable points.

Hi All,

Just to update Meeks Rd, the old rail tanker sidings have been upgraded with concrete sleepers and a anti vandal fence put around the 2 tracks.

I've also seen track machines stabled at Ben Bullen (old refuge siding), Bathurst (no.3 up goods siding), Raglan goods/master sidings), Locksley (perway siding), Tarana (former Oberon Branch or perway siding), Wallerawang (perway siding), Lithgow (up sidings), Bell (up siding), Mt Victoria (former down sidings) to name a few places west.
