A-City trains

The normal weekend timetable on the Seaford line needs 4 units to run the standard 30min daytime service.  Up to very recently these have all usually been DEMUs -  EMUs generally have had a rest on Saturday & Sunday.

When there have been Footy Extra trains to Adelaide Oval, AdMet have run 5 extra sets, intersperced with the regular timetabled Seaford runs.  Usually these extras have been EMUs, but have only done "in and out" trips, leaving the all-day roster to DEMUs.

Today was different in that EMUs were deployed onto 3 out of 4 of the all-day rosters, so electrics were running up and down all day and into the evening.  2 of the 5 Footy Extra pre-game runs were 3-car 3000-class, the other 3 were EMUs.

Maybe this was to cater for extra weekend Show crowds, or maybe there has been a change of thinking and we will see 4000-class EMUs working most/all of weekend services in the future.

You'd hope that they'd be using the A-City fleet on normal services now that there are nine units in service, and the tenth delivered but not yet in service.  They can't be kept in cotton wool forever.

If only the Department knew that people aren't actually that impressed by them. Sure, they sound a little like a spaceship when they take off and that's good to get a minor wow out of most people the first time they see one, but for the majority of people a train is a train is a train and they would be more impressed if they started running on time.

4002 at Dry Creek while a major refurbishment is undertaken for it similar to 4001 it has it's seats all removed at the moment so 4002 won't be returning to passenger service for awhile. I assume the plan was to wait for 4001 to enter revenue service before sending 4002 down to DC for major refurbishment.

So 4002 will be MIA for awhile now.

A rushed (if it even occurred) tender process and a miss written, apparently worthless contractural document, featuring few, if any, meaningful penalty clauses...

Oh, but you mean with the train?

Replacing the floors due to some structural problems, issues with the draw bar side clearances and generally bringing the units up to QA standards.

I was out this afternoon wondering if 4001 might be in service.  4003-8 were covering 6 daytime diagrams and 2 peak diagrams were covered by 4009 and 4010.  This the first I have seen of 4010 in service.

4010 was in service earlier in the week.  I travelled to Seaford on it on Tuesday and didn't notice anything unusual.  On Wed it passed Ascot Pk not in service citybound at 5pm and worked the 1723 stopper.  On Thurs it lay over at ARS during the day and formed the 1750 express.

The pattern of 6 emus out of 9 daytime diagrams and 2 peak workings continues on weekdays.  Sometimes the peak workings remain at ARS during the day but some days there have been empty workings in from Seaford leaving 1600-1630.

Emus are now appearing on regular weekend Seafords.  Yesterday 3 emus and 1 demu were running.

4010 was not seen in service on Tuesday but was back in service today.

At Seaford Depot 4011T was no longer in the unloading road today and I assume it has been moved (+ another car?) into the shed.

Interesting that 4002 is back.  There was nothing (apart from 4012T) in the depot yard on Friday afternoon.  Has 4011 been out for test yet?

Yesterday teatime the basic Seaford service was covered by 3 EMUs and a 3-car DEMU.  5 EMUs worked the additional Seaford - City trips and the Brighton stoppers were a 2-car DEMU and 2 EMUs.

In the southern times messenger newspaper . Page 9 . The link does have a zoom on the page

The new trains are getting new horns . At a cost of $ 66,000 .

It seems that some people don't like trains using the horns for safety reasons .

It's amazing what a couple of whingers can do .
