Ultimately all of these growing population centres are connected by way of the controversial and presently unused north-south pipeline via the desalination plant at Wonthaggi, subsequently when the next long drought comes along has drought-proofed a large part of regional Victoria.
....
Mike - I don't believe that the Sugarloaf pipeline actually connects the desal plant (in Gippsland) with the Goulburn Goldfields super-pipe? I could be wrong but I don't believe that the system can operate in that manner.

But today governments sell off land that was planned for railway lines.
Putting train stations on the existing lines around Bendigo has to be preferable to using buses.
I would not stop at marong I would run to the station past where marong once was into Bridgewater.
It is not about foaming.
I can't imagine anywhere in Victoria where V/line rail services could be economically and successfully extended.
There may be some 'tinkering' involved but the main infrastructure is in place.
When push comes to shove in the next drought, and for the naysayers and disbelievers there will be a 'next drought', it's not going to be a difficult proposition to link up the Desal plant which I believe feeds Cardinia reservoir to the remainder of the network.
Water can flow either direction through the currently unused North-South super-pipe.
I hate to tell u this but, the North South pipeline from Eildon can only be pumped to Sugarloaf, it may disappoint u but that is FACT.............. double check for yourself....................
