Looks like the power to Southern Cross platform 8 has been switched on.

Any idea what lines will be using it?

Interesting.  How would they get to the Racecourse line?  Via North Melbourne platforms 1&2 like Craigieburn trains, or via NM platform 5&6 and flyover the Footscray lines like now?
  712M Chief Commissioner

Is platform 8 long enough to accommodate two 6-car trains? Whilst I like the idea of using it to terminate sparks in peak times, it needs a set of escalators at the southern end of the platform to allow easier transfers to the other suburban platforms. Anyone who has had to run from platform 9 to 8 South will understand what I'm talking about

Sorry in advance is this is viewed as a silly question. What is meant by power back on ?

From Platform 8 at Southern Cross, trains can be routed to any down platform at North Melbourne.

At lease have  the gates between platform 9 to 8 (Bourke street end) should be open - so people do not need to leave the pay area

Would that mean special trains will no longer originate from Flinders Street?

Platform 8 can be accessed from Flinders Street.

Platform 8 used to be accessed from Flinders Street. Points are now clipped and the idea is to remove the connection - simplification - read, lets save a few dollars. The points for the ladder track, Clifton Hill / City Circle viaduct line across to 8 and 9 at Flinders Street are also clipped and removed from service.

Yay, they are going to bring back L Classes to Traralgon. Only kidding. I did see a Metro trains stop here sign on plat 8 on Saturday and though, that's strange.

I bet platform 8 will be used by metro for extra trains to/from the suburbs for the footy or other events at Docklands Stadium

Simplification?  In Victoria we call it removing flexibility.

What's the history of this platform? Why was it wired but not used for sparks?
And how did an N class damage it?

Race and show trains will still depart Flinders St, just not as many as people in the northern group don't need to come all the way in. This keeps flinders relatively normal from a train/platform management perspective.

According to PTV's new map, Showgrounds/racecourse services will not be going to Flinders St.

... and this is what I have been told by somebody who should know.  There are apparently 45+ "events" listed for either Showgrounds or Racecourse in 2015.

Platform 8 North & Centre  is like 255m so will hold 1 spark easily but not 2.
