Theorists, yes, but why "left wing"?
Valvegear
The loopy 'whole language' idea is part of the 'pure discovery' model of teaching (or more accurately, not teaching) which has only ever been supported by the left wing theorists. Pure discovery didn't work when they tried it in the 1970s, it didn't work when they reheated it in the 1980s and it's failing our schools now.

I'm not saying that the right wing 'back to basics' focus pushed by the Howard government is completely right either, but it's a hell of a lot closer to the mark than pure discovery and it was a necessary correction to a declining system. The ALP governments since then (located firmly in the centre, not on the left) recognised this and supported more rational policies on learning with their engagement in the culture wars largely limited to the teaching of history, but there will be a whole generation of illiterate graduates before the teachers trained only to 'facilitate' discovery instead of actually teaching get pensioned off.

There are many things the left get right in the world of education, but the 'whole language' model is not one of them.

Forgive this old fart's ignorance, or possibly I'm so way out of date with this day and age weird sayings, but what in heck is a "choofy".

Don't worry - you are not the only one.Smile

The term "choofy" could, of course, simply be derived from the little boys' "choof choof" to describe a train.

Thank you for this post justapassenger.
It makes a lot of sense to me.
I am amazed at the lax attitude to work at my grand-daughter's high school compared to what it was like in my time, even though it was 60 years ago! It makes me wonder how students will cope with a real job in the big world.

Thanks for the enlightenment. Makes some sense now and sort of understand why the desperate statement need for a choofy.
This maybe the culprit for crook English etc not being quite the best. Glad I'm from the old school days, none of that nonesense back then. Wink

They will get by as there is a good chance that their superiors and/or audience will not know any better and if they did would likely say 'what does it matter'?

Hi all, as the school holidays are almost over, let's  stop this topic - who said what and when I think is now covered.

I hope you all agree.
