    Why is rail not used much to the Port of Geelong?  I passed there last week on the train and it looks like a wasteland.  Lots of sidings and potential but no trains other than the grain terminal.

    Location: Going off the rails on a crazy train.
    There is no rail access to any part of the port.  All removed or booked out, except for the terminal.

    most of the roads in the port have been ripped up and replaced by a hardstand. just the grain loop remains operational

    But what cargo comes in and out of Geelong other than bulk ?

    The port is under-utilised.

    Drove past corio quay the other day & noticed that Laminted timber beams are being imported to Geelong. Also steel beams & wire are commonly imported through corio quay.
    Geelong is still definitely under-utilised considering the future constraints of Melbourne as a port. Sure could save a few billion $$$ over Westerpor with ready made rail links & freeway access to Melbourne. Dredging is proposed to accommodate suezmax ships(300mts+) in the next year or two. The port will then be able to handle most ships that enter port Phillip.

    only real way of utilising the current port area would be to make use of the now somwhat more empty Nth Geelong yard as a marshaling area, and shunt short rakes of wagons onto the port area for loading/unloading.

    Is the dreging of Geelong port really going to happen ?

    The rail yards are position perfectly with short trips to the port.

    Geelong could take a bit of the traffic from Melbourne if planned right and some of north Geelong yard could be converted to SG to cover interstate traffic.

    With recent announcements of on dock rail upgrades for the Port of Melbourne will these plans for Geelong Port and increased rail start to take shape?

    We are aware of new developments by Qube at Geelong for Cement traffic on rail.

    On dock rail exists for the port the Corio Quay tracks but have not been used for a while.  If I owned or operated Geelong I would now be pushing for some cash to upgrade the Geelong port.

    The CIGL has wagons on sidings 3 weeks ago when I last passed.  That was in late March.

    Wonder where the Qube Cement train is going to start?
