Derailment at Adelaide Parklands

There are radio and newspaper reports of a derailment of GSR passenger cars at Keswick. An incoming freight has been stopped over both Victoria and Leader Streets. It would appear that suburban trains are not affected, a situation that would likely have been very different if the Seaford line underpass had not been built.

Yes it is. Doesn't seem to affect the BG passenger lines in the area.

2MP9 left 2 hours late last night from Melbourne.  On time would have the train into Keswick at around 06:33.  Given the derailment is after that time 06:33 would very much suggest 2MP9.

Lead loco SCT009.

Looks like some empty flats have 'folded', or in this case, jacknifed.

The derailment is being reported by several news sources as the consequence of a collision between freight trains.  For example http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-31/freight-train-blocks-adelaide-crossing-collision/6361000?section=sa

2MP9 may have run up the back of another train or someone up the back of SCT ?

This image might provide some clues.

I would guess the SCT 2MP9 has hit the back of the wagons in front.

Police have been forced to close roads in Adelaide this morning after two freight trains collided in Adelaide's inner south-west causing the derailment of several carriages.

Two level crossings are now blocked south of the scene at Keswick as authorities work to clear the track.

It is understood one freight train collided with the rear of another which caused a train passing through the crossings while the boom gates were down to become blocked.

Level crossings have been closed south of the crash. (Twitter @alicemonfries)

The SCT train seems to have nudged the train in front .

The train network controller officers are only about 100 metres from where the incident happened

The overland would be around Murtoa so maybe the line will clear prior to its arrival into Adelaide.

What train did it hit? Maybe 2MP1 Aurizon?

The report on this one will be an entertaining read.

Not so entertaining will be the momentum it will give to the Blackwood NIMBYs who (safe in the convenience of not living near the death zone that is Portrush Road) want trains to bypass Adelaide.

Photos show wagons with QRN and Aurizon logos on the reflective strips and one wagon was QQGY548M. This confirms that the train rear ended was definitely 2MP1

Matt

Edit saw another pic showing QQGY wagon number.

The number of trains stacked up behind the crash site in each direction might still be an issue on a line with such a low capacity.

GSR will need to start activating their coach substitute plan sooner rather than later if they don't have a cast iron guarantee that it will get through, because they depend on sourcing coaches from third-party operators and that takes time to organise.

Gheringhap loop railcams show a motorail wagon on the overland 3MA8 so that will be interesting.

That train being a Perth service would it have well wagons in the consist?

Anyone know what other trains will be delayed?  What about east bound services from Adelaide?
