Metro cannot say when it will reopen the Stony Point railway line after it was shut this week after a series of safety breaches in which boom gates failed to drop for an approaching train.

The most recent level crossing failure happened last week in Tyabb, south of Melbourne.

It was the second failure this month and the last straw for rail operator Metro, which closed the line indefinitely on Monday to avoid the risk of a collision.

Poor track condition has been blamed for the boom gate failures. Contamination from rust, leaves and sand is interfering with track signals that detect a train's approach, Metro said.

Seriously.  Metro blame track maintenance issues and they are responsible for maintenance.

Is the long island BHP train still running 4 times per day?

What is the Rail Safety Regulator doing about this?

Good point.

How are these issues allowed to develop to the point where services are restored on a metro line ?

I'm sure Metro would be glad to be rid of the line, and this action is in line with that. Surely a rail grinder could be sent down there at night.

Get rid of it ?

To whom ?

Spend some money on electrification and some Gerard maintenance and integrate it with the timetable proper.

Long Island is still running, so I presume it's the interface between the Sprinters and the level crossing circuit issue again.

Axle counters are getting installed so hopefully it will solve the problem once and for all.

If you take this issue plus other reports about the standard of Track Maintenance on other areas of the Metro network then it really is poor.  I know budgets were severely tightened under the previous Government but remember we now have a broad gauge rail grinder that arrived as a result of the fiasco that took place on the Bairnsdale Line.   Where is it and what has it been doing since then.  Really track infrastructure condition on Metro is rea;;y way below what it should be for a major network such as Melbourne s.

The north east standard gauge is now probably better than most of the metro network ?

Sadly nothing will be done until there is a major 'accident'.
Just watching the way the corridor connections between cars on Siemens trains are thrown around by track irregularities highlights how bad track conditions are. Even track which was completely relaid with concrete sleepers only a year or so ago is now as rough as the timber sleepered track it replaced.

And that's because of a lack of ballast remediation work that should be undertaken concurrently. It's a costly repeat of the not dissimilar problem that occurred on the northeast standard gauge which has been well aired on Railpage.  This all comes at a time when the operator has been getting bonuses for improved on time running due to quite an extent by skipping stations et al. Again another issued well aired but highlighting the weaknesses of the current rail franchising model.

There are a few limitations of axle counters:

* you need to run special 4 core cables from the main level crossing relay room to both ends of each track circuit, typically three in number.

* AFAIK, axle counters are incompatible with so-called "predictor" level crossing which give about the same warning time for both slow and fast trains.

* Axle counters can forget what the count is up to, and need to be manually reset.

There are a number of axle counters in NSW on lines where there may be no regular trains for weeks or months, such as Dubbo-Werris Creek.

Im working of a smartphone so I'm limited in what I can do but there are several Youtube videos of the poor track condition in Melbourne.   Might be good for the Rail Regulator to have a look.   Or perhaps thaey need to get out more and be pro-active rather than as APPEARS to me being more reactive!!!!   Sprinter Railcars have been around a long time now.  There is lots of knowledge and research been undertaken globally about managing the wheel to rail interface for lightweight rail vehicles.   And 1 aspect is about good track condition.   Axle counters should be regarded as complementary to ensuring the safe and normal operation of level crossing committment, not the single so called fix

Sprinters have been around since 1993, in that time, running as single units has been fine, up until recent years, when suppossedly there were issues with track circuits and level crossing detection, meaning single unit operation has been banned. Now, it seems further problems of a similar nature have caused the complete closure of the Stony Point Line.

I'm not suggesting that there is nothing wrong with the track maintenence on the Stony Point Line, but is there also a developing issue with the Sprinter railcars that is yet to be addressed?

Personally I think it is a shame that single unit operation is no longer allowed, as I beleive there are certain services that are suited to a single sprinter unit, these services now either have to be cancelled, or built up to run as 2 or more cars, costing more to run than otherwise would be necessery.
