"For the number of passengers that use it, Broadmeadows would be the worst station in Victoria," Cr Atmaca said.

Needs a facelift and some modernisation.  The Standard Gauge platform needs to be replaced as a longer one and better integrated with the BG platforms.

It is looking tired.

This issue has finally be raised. The station is very tired and badly in need if a facelift. As to the reasons why it has not been done. One can only speculate.

Perhaps it has am ethnic to do with the vandalism and graffiti around the station and the clientele ?

I agree about the standard gauge platform. It needs replacing with a covered platform which is longer.

Will it happen ?

Broady station looked terrible in 1995, the last time I used it.  Werribee station is likewise on the dingy side too.  The underground access tunnel reminds me of a sewer....

City of Hume has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country - 1 in 3 adults of working age don't have a job.

When you go there the $2 shops and pawnbrokers are thick on the ground, and yes, the station also seems to reflect that poverty. I'm not sure that there's a lot of interest in improving amenities for the very poorest people in Victoria; they're more likely to have a new jail built for them instead.

It doesn't need a face lift.   It needs a bulldozer and start all over again.   It has had several so called facelifts as recently as 2010 with so called improvements to the up platform and toilets etc

Trying to be balanced for a moment though, the entire corridor has buried within it a massive fuel and aviation gas pipeline and one of the largest fibre optic and other major communications cables in the Australia buried there as well.

These were such high risk, costly pieces of infrastructure that resulted in a seperate platform being bulit to the east for the standard gauge platform rather than creating an island platform of standard gauge on one side and broad gauge on the other face to facilitate transfers which was the preferred option.

There are plans made as far back as 2008 to build an entirely new passenger concourse across all three tracks as well as linked to the shopping centre at the northern end to transform the station completely more on the theme of the rebuilt Sunshine and Footscray stations but as always it comes down to cost.  There is no doubt the new schemes at both Sunshine and Footscray have transformed those stations which also have similar social problems.

I still say bulldoze it and start over.  Anything is merely a band aid solution.  A lot can be done around urban renewal and creating friendly safe environments in public sapaces is  a key part of that.  But be prepared for a solution that costs over a hunfdred million or more but would have opportunities for commercial involvement.

There's mini 'Detroits' popping up all over the country. Take a walk around the business district of Geelong to see urban decay in full swing... not at night though. Apparently not a good place to be walking around after dark!

They've spent hundreds of millions on Sunshine, Footscray and Dandenong station precincts but the underlying problems of unemployment, drugs, alcohol and crime are all still pretty obvious to the casual observer.

As a Geelong resident for my entire life, I can agree with you in regards to the CBD.

There is plenty of empty shops and scumbag teenagers hanging out at the bus stops, smoking and swearing.  The influx of migrants is beginning to have an effect with their bored children hanging out in groups, giving innocent people passing by a hard time.

I used to frequent the city most weekends 10 years ago for a drink at night and never had issues.
On the rare occasion that I go out now, I mainly go to the strip club because of the friendly atmosphere, on the ball security and music that is not that loud that you can't have a conversation.

I only see Geelong getting worse, not better when Ford finally shut.  Granted the Mayor, like him or not seems to be working hard but when his political alignment is not the same as the State Government, he struggles with the big ticket items.

Yes Broady does need a total rebuild to make it fit for purpose and able to cope with the present level of demand and allow for more growth.

But I'll raise you Kananook as the worst slum on the network even though millions was allegedly squandered spend on it quite recently. That merely turned an old slum into a new one with a hopelessly inappropriate design.

A friend of mine's parents retired to Geelong twenty years ago to a nice old Victorian-era house near Eastern Park. They're desperately trying to get out now because they say the poverty and crime has become a big problem, particularly the gangs of kids that you mentioned. The lady of the household had her purse pick-pocketed while she was waiting to cross at the traffic lights (she didn't even know it had happened till she got home) and their garage has been broken into and ransacked numerous times. Being elderly they're quite frightened for their safety but they can't get the price they need for their house so they're stuck there for the time being.

I'm afraid with accelerating job losses around the region it's probably going to get worse; the only consolation is that you aren't alone - it's a scene being played out across the country.

This isn't a new problem, I seem to remember that back when I was a kid, Broady station got burnt down every few years and each time they rebuilt it to a more and more feral proof level. I haven't heard of it being torched recently, so I assume it's now a concrete bunker coated with several layers of fire retardant that even the Taliban couldn't burn down or blow up?

Considering that some of the locals are in fact former members of the Taliban, you must be correct.
