Trying to find this railway location

Hi guys,

I've stumbled across these online photographs and I am trying to track down the location they were shot.

In 2014 I was a finalist as the QLD Landscape Photographer of the Year and I am the current two time QLD Documentary Photographer of the Year. So I am looking to document the space as I find it beautiful, and I don't mean to treat the area with any disrespect that would damage it.

Does anyone have any ideas where to look?

My understanding is that it's either SE QLD or close to the border NSW. It's somewhere where ferns grow, there is a distant mountain of sorts in the center, some cutting through shallow rock, and corrugated iron used. Possible under a large road as I haven't seen any other kinds of tunnels use corrugated.

Thanks to anyone that might be able to help.

Regards,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Welcome to Railpage.

There is a tunnel similar to this under the New England Hwy at Dalveen (on the Granite Belt), but I haven't seen ferns growing in that tunnel, neither does it look the same to me somehow.

There is one or maybe two tunnels of similar construction between Glanmire and Imbil on the Mary Valley line, but I'm fairly certain that these pics are not taken there either...

So, I don't know really, but at least I've eliminated some tunnels! Smile

In the second shot the proportion of the photographer to track gauge suggests std gauge rather than 3'6" so NSW rather than Qld. Is there somewhere where a major road, or perhaps a landbridge for a wildlife crossing, crosses the now not operating Casino to Murwillumbar line? Perhaps elsewhere as the rails are directly on the sleepers, not on plates as photos on http://www.nswrail.net/lines/show.php?COLLCC=4141720808&name=NSW:Murwillumbah show. Could just be a short photographer...

Hi Graham, thanks for the recommendation! I did spot that tunnel under Dalveen with the similar corrugated looking effect on the inside, although the one I saw didn't have the rock to waist level, or the bolted iron. And of course not the outlook as you mentioned!

I'll have a look at the Mary Valley line as you suggested. Whilst I may not find the exact spot, perhaps I'll find something else of interest in the meantime! I'd love to know exactly why the tunnel was built the way it was, perhaps it'd offer a clue as to where it is located.

Matt,

Whatever you find, be sure to share it here!

Is it possible its NOT a Tunnel at all but a Culvert built on the cover and fill basis because I have never seen foundations like that or corrugated linings used in that manner which makes me wonder is it a highway deviation done that way rather than a bridge?

It certainly appears to be Standard gauge at least and if its 'in the North' as suggested, could it be between say Casino and Murwillumbah under a deviation of the Pacific Highway?

Unfortunately the Ferns dont help as they grow prolifically between Kurrajong Heights and Mt Tomah 80 kms west of Sydney on the Bells Line of Road because they get the warm rains that follow the coastline.

I'm leaning towards the Standard Gauge theory now. The track looks to be in reasonable condition. Still no idea of the location however!

Matt, what info do you have regarding the location?

The vegetation outside the tunnel suggests a dryer climate than NE NSW. A Hunter Valley coal mine line? A 'service suspended' line in the NSW Divide or Western Slopes areas where a main road has been upgraded? The rock form is consistent with it not being NE NSW.

Is this what you refer to?  I so then Wally deserves the prize.

Hi everyone, thanks for your sleuthing!

I actually was thinking about offering a prize. Maybe $100 via paypal or a signed fine art print once I photograph the location to anyone that offers visual confirmation of the location or provides the location which is later confirmed?

Wally - that is a great suggestion. In going under that many lanes of traffic it appears to be the right length, looks overgrown.

Having seen a few photos now of that spot though it does appear to be a different tunnel. No cutting at the sides, looks like the tunnel goes right to ground. Also slightly different elements outside the tunnel. Absolutely will check it out when I am down in Newcastle though! Thanks for the awesome suggestion.

In terms of location, It's been suggested that it is somewhere in south-east qld to northern nsw. But it could be further afield. I have checked for places like Wally suggested where rail goes under highways on a diagonal that would cause the long length and construction method but haven't made any confirmed sightings yet.

Anyhow the prize I offered above is official so if anyone has confirmation of the spot etc. then let me know Smile

Here are some pics under the Richmond Vale M3 Tunnel that I found.

That is unlikely to be south east qld or ne nsw. The only cut and covers of any length have no abandoned lines beneath them.

Dalveen and Glen Aplin are both much shorter. And that is not the mary valley line.

Thanks for the info Joe. Just yesterday I found out the people that photographed the tunnel were near Girraween within the week that they were in the tunnel so I am investigating that area. For the most part it's way too populated to have a graffiti free tunnel near the populated areas but perhaps there is something further out.

Old Glenbrook Railway Tunnel is out west of there as is the Knapsack Viaduct which are both nice pieces.

What about the New England Highway crossing over the railway north of Tenterfield. About 10km south of Wallangarra.

I think you are on to something there. I would have crossed over there numerous times and not seen what was underneath too!

WICKED. Yes I am excited. Thank you so much for your knowledge.

I am a man of my word, and my offer of $100 or a beautiful signed print are still both on the table. If you'd like to email me matt@mattmakes.photos with what you'd like and how to get it to you, that'd be awesome =)

You can see some of my work at http://www.landscape.gallery so you can see my competence in taking a decent photograph of it =P

I will look to shoot the location in the next week or two =)
