Adam Goodes should hang his head in shame

Er no he did not Donald. I suggest you should listen to his transcript, for nowhere in his speech did he say that. He did however, use that language in a totally separate incident, after he had watched a film which portrayed the inhumane treatment metered out to Indigenous people at the hands of the British. He admits it was strong, but you know what, he did get called out for people like Andrew Bolt took 2 and 2 and made it 6 and people like you swallowed it.

Are you happy being called a murderer and rapist because of something that happened 200 years ago?   Me, I'm still angry at the French (the Normans) invading England and all the murders and rapes that occurred then.   Every country at some stage in history has been invaded/taken over/controlled by another and the treatment metered out to the inhabitants was usually cruel and inhumane.   I am not saying to forget what happened, but stop blaming the current citizens for atrocities in the past that we have no control of.   It was a different way of life when the British came to the land down under.   What happened then is recorded in history and that we never go back to that way of life again.   Do you agree that 10 year old kids that were transported out from England for stealing a loaf of bread was over the top?   That was the way of life then.

I am not racist - I just don't like Adam Goodes.

Apart from Adam Goodes saying Invasion Day, which he will agree was strong, mostly he is arguing that Indigenous people be treated with respect and hasnt mentioned about Land Rights at all.
mejhammers1

It was an example to illustrate that not all "aboriginal" people think and act the same way.

Graham for all intents and purposes it is their country, like Britain belongs to White Anglo Saxon People and so on. There is no ambiguity about that.
mejhammers1

Not at all, to whom do the vast quantity of uninhabited celestial bodies "belong"? Just because you happen to have been born somewhere does not give you "ownership".

Genuine Aboriginal people (and I know many) do not care about land rights etc and will happily co-exist with those of other races that show them proper respect, just as they have co-existed with the native wildlife for thousand of years.
Graham4405

I have a problem with that statement. So you are only comfortable with Indigenous people who are quiet? Are you saying that Adam Goodes is not a Genuine Aboriginal? Like the American Indian they have been marginalised in their own country. Mr Goodes is seeking recognition of his people, like what happens to Indigenous people in Canada and NZ. Are you saying because of his strong stance against racism that he does not show respect to other races?
mejhammers1

No and not necessarily. Who are Adam Goodes' people? Not all his forebears are aboriginal people. I can't pretend to know all about Adam Goodes, but the way he has carried on does him no favours.

Comparing Englishmen, Irishmen, American Jokes to the sort of racism that Indigenous People have endured even to the present is so far off the mark it is not funny (Pardon the Pun)
mejhammers1

It was a basic example to demonstrate that most of us have acted in a racist way at some time, not a comparison. There was no intent to minimise the horrors inflicted upon anyone.

Well in a  effort to stop all thos personal attacks while talking about a hot topic, I have simply removed 99% of the posts, from several users.

I do expect these users will ALL be annoyed, but I am being equally annoyed for all of them and not biased. Nor can I say anyone will be pleased with the outcome, as a lot of opinion has been removed.

However, now that it is cleaned up, I will reopen it so assume most  have read this and not continue the off topic attacks etc etc and thread wandering.

I am not interested in the topic personally.

On the ABC news at midday, the Mayor of Geelong, Darryn Lyons, has now weighed into this debate because Goodes is due to play against Geelong at Geelong this weekend. He is now calling for all booing to be stopped, and hinted that 'no booing will be tolerated'.

It has been a tradition to boo the opposition, the umpires and anyone behaving like a prat for as long as I have been attending football matches, now the idiot PC brigade are going to claim yet another long standing tradition in the name of 'racism'.

You can bet there will be a bunch of paid security thugs hovering in case anyone utters the word 'boo', ready to muscle them to the ground and beat daylights out of them.

Another victory for hysteria.

When are we going to get over this what the British did crap 200 years ago?

I am white but not of British background. My kids are 25% Chinese I refuse to be held accountable for what happened 200 years ago. In fact it's only a very very small minority of descendents that are even linked by birth.

Being a red head I got bullied and name called as a kid, will someone give me an apology, no? Will someone give my wife's family an apology for the way the early Chinese were treated by both black and white, no!

Will the aboriginals apologise to the original first natives for which they made extinct on the main land and dramatically changed the Australian ecosystem. No.

So Adam Goodes and his do good supporters can F off. Dozens of othet abiriginals ptofessional players are cheered because they are good at what they do. People don't like you because you are black, they don't like you because you are an idiot!

This is what Adam Goodes said after watching a film

“Imagine watching a film that tells the truth about the terrible injustices committed over 225 years against your people, a film that reveals how Europeans, and the governments that have run our country, have raped, killed and stolen from your people for their own benefit.
“Now imagine how it feels when the people who benefited most from those rapes, those killings and that theft — the people in whose name the oppression was done — turn away in disgust when someone seeks to expose it.

Strong Words, I am absolutely positive that he is not holding to account every present day white Australian to account for it

I find myself in strong agreement - nobody has thought the broader implications through. No player will ever able to be booed or hooted at, ever again, even if they are obnoxious on field or do deliberately provocative things.

Some current media personalities like Sam Newman have built their post-footy careers on their infamy while playing; the fact that people aren't allowed to hoot at the opposition any longer for foul play is going to change the dynamics of watching it in a crowd because you can't be negative in any way towards any individual player in case your actions are perceived as discriminatory... despite the fact that he might have just tripped another player.

Twenty-first century group-think is starting creep me out more and more...

You sound like one of the bad tempered old dudes "Mate get the ffk of my lawn"

Seriously though, I get it you do not like Adam Goodes and contrary to what you believe he is not trying to hold accountable every White Person accountable for what happened 200 Years ago.

I suggest you read the transcript of his speech, and try and find anything imflammatory.

“It’s an honour to win an award for doing stuff that you love and that you believe in. For me, I chose that life is all about actions and interactions. I believe that our choices and how we interact with each other creates our relationships and this in turn creates the environment that we live in.
Our environment shapes our communities which then shapes the country that we all live in. Growing up as an indigenous Australian I have experienced my fair share of racism. While it has been difficult a lot of the time, it has also taught me a lot and also shaped my values and what I believe in today. I believe racism is a community issue which we all need to address and that’s why racism stops with me.
There are always two ways we can look at a situation. We can choose to get angry. Or not. We can choose to help others. Or not. Or choose to be offended. Or not. We can keep our silence or educate ourselves and others about racism and minority populations.
It is not just about taking responsibility for your own actions but speaking to your mates when they take out their anger on their loved ones, minority groups or make racist remarks. It means treating people the way you want to be treated, whether that’s your manners, the way you talk to people, whether they are your loved ones or the person serving your dinner. It’s about how you choose to give back and make a difference to those around you, your community or your country that goes outside of just yourself.
I believe we are all connected whether we like it or not. We are all equal and the same in so many ways. My hope is that we as a nation can break down the silos between races, break down those stereotypes of minority populations, indigenous populations and all other minority groups. I hope we can be proud of our heritage regardless of the colour of our skin and be proud to be Australian.
I’m not here to tell you what to think, or how to act to raise your children. All I’m here to do is tell you about my experiences and hope you choose to be aware of your actions and interactions so that together we can eliminate racism.
I’m so grateful for this award and this honour, however the real reward is when everyone is talking to their mates, to their families and their children, having those conversations and educating others about racism. What it looks like, how hurtful and how pointless it is and how we can eliminate it.
The ultimate reward is when all Australians see each other as equals and treat each other as equals. To me, everything is about people and the choices we make. I believe it’s the people and the interactions between us that makes this country so special. Thank you so much and have a great Australia Day.”

Nick Kyrgios heavily booed in Montreal.

Would it be because he a loud mouthed, poorly behaving, classless sook, or (apparently more likely) an aboriginal? Hmmm.

Maybe the French quarter of Canada is just racist.

Nope, the focus is back to playing the game. It seems to have run it’s course and that should be the end of it.

These awards really are to simply inflate a person's ego and like Aaron I would turn it down if named as Australian of the year. Just about everyone at some time or other in their lives deserves to get an award like this but why only certain sections of Australia get these awards in the first place, sports, art, political. The rest get overlooked though, those people that put their lives on the line hardly get a mention in awards like this. It is simply a celebrity ego trip if you ask me! And Adam Goode's ego is way out of control!

Will be interesting to see what (if anything) that Dustin Martin gets for the two finger salute he gave the Collingwood cheer squad.
A precedent has been set by the AFL that you can make gestures at the crowd and there are no consequences.
