Orient Express M van Billboard Advertising liveries coming soon

  BIG-BEAR Chief Train Controller

I have seen the first ad for the advertising m vans today on the back of the catch point magazine which turned up today .

12 different liveries planned and more details coming soon . prices etc

On the ad 4 versions pictured . Caltex , west end beer , TNT , Eldersmith .

At the moment I can only think of 10 versions of the advertising m vans .

There was

2 x versions of eldersmith vans ( brown & cream )

2 x versions of farmers union ( green & lime / green & red sides)

2 x versions of brighton cement ( one blue & one grey )

1 x TNT

1 x Caltex ( red )

1 x Metters ( orange )

1 x West end beer ( grey sides ) the red one at the NRM is not original colour ?

So can anyone else can think of the missing 2 liveries

There is two versions of the TNT van as well if you check. One say's Thomas Nationwide Transport and the other one says Thomas National Transport. It might just be a repaint of the same van but there may have been two of them!

I am not of the era, so I will stand corrected, but the signage I have seen for Liquaphene were a very pale orange/pink, like a really pale apricot colour. Older jumbuck growers may know.

The one thing I'd like to know is did any of them make an appearance in Victoria and what years if they did. As I'm only interested in three or four of them, 'cos who knows if Auscision will ever do another run of advertising U vans.

I would have thought M-vans would have crossed the border, though I can't categorically confirm.

The M-vans entered service from the 1920's and continued in service to around the 1970-1980 period.

Hope this helps.

I picked up my first two Billboard vans today .

TNT , Cockings versions .

Very happy with them .

11 more to get .

The models turned up with black roofs . I thought that the pre production models had dark grey roofs .

I don't know what colour is right for the models . But they still look good .

I've actually been looking for photos that show the tops of M-vans.  They do look quite dark in the NRM videos, at least the the normal below-track-side level of the camera man.

From the photos on the OER site, some were very dark or black (although ironically not the TNT or Cockings version) but I'm guessing they all ended up at least dark grey, whether in the steam or Alco era.

They were just standard M vans and used as such when the advertising was painted on the outside of them. They were not kept captive in service, or used exclusively by who ever had the sign-age on the sides but any where a normal M van could go one of these could turn up. So in all likely hood then yes all could have theoretically been into Victoria at some stage of their live's.

The TNT van should have grey ends and roof on it, the model has the cream and orange on the ends and the roof is black.  The photo included with the TNT van on the certificate shows the grey ended version as the photo was taken sometime in the 1960's possibly 1964 but not sure of the exact date. The Cockings van should also have a dark grey roof to match the colour on the ends.

I have both of them and have done the above alterations to them they look a lot more like the SAR prototypes after it is done!

Try this link for the photo of the TNT van it is marked on the back of the photo as 1960!

Understandable, if the certificate in the box is correct and they only produced 250 for sale. #210 of 250 arrived on my doorstep this morning.

The 2nd batch of advertising vans are now available, if you're real lucky you might also find 'sold out' vans at retail shops. Last week I found a TNT livery van at Trainworld, it quickly found a new home  Smile
