Truss kick-starts Ballarat Freight Hub

News article: Truss kick-starts Ballarat Freight Hub

Warren Truss has opened an Expressions of Interest period for a proposed intermodal hub on the Melbourne to Ararat rail line.

  MetroFemme Assistant Commissioner

The idea of a intermodal and logistics hub in Ballarat has been Round for 10 years so nice to see this finally coming to reality for all concerned. The news says a grain handler has already purchased a large slice of land in the area which is great news for Ballarat. Let us prey enough land is made available for expansion and the project is large enough from the start to handle the business.

Wrong railway gauge, it will be difficult to attract customers with the extremely limited reach that broad gauge has now. It will end up being a truck interchange with very little to do with the rail-head.

What on earth is a "high-productivity freight vehicle"?

It is likely to be dual gauge with SG going through Ballarat now as a part of the Mildura SG works easy run out to the terminal and not a really busy line so plenty of paths. Ballarat loading was (i think) attached and detatched from 9101/9102 trains so with SG this could be an option but then again no one is now suggesting Mildura on SG will only have one operator there may be more and they may not be PN.

The grain forwarder is interesting as this is an easy customer for rail.

This will drive SG only from Ballarat to Ararat me thinks.

A bigger B double that carries 2 TEU containers per trailer (ie a 40' container on each). 68.5 tonne General Mass Limit. They're only allowed on a handful of approved roads at present, including the Western Hwy and the Calder Hwy.

I'm pretty cynical about this Ballarat freight hub. The relevance of its proximity to the Ararat railway line is about the same as its proximity to Ballarat Airport.

There was a track and maybe still is from Ballarat to Wendoree used for the grain silos.

Ballarat to Linton Junction (now close to where the new Wendoree station Is) was once a double track mainline, along with the Linton line running along side the Ararat line for many km's before It veered off.

Today the North track Is In use, the South track and what's left of the former Linton line has been cut at many places.

Removal of rails and sleepers, mostly at level crossings.
Also at the junction of the former Renden line.

Sounds like a solution to the gauge issue if there is one.

Has anybody located a formal document on the government website as I am looking with no luck so far.

Appears a straight forward proposal and if Victrack are kept away could be a success.

Finished reading the main documents there are quite a few and my thoughts as follows:

a. The plan is comprehensive
b. The government looks very serious regarding making it work
c. the land is large
d. the government has requested LCL and Container terminal requirements

Makes me think it will be going ahead unless no one wants to bid but with government support they will all be in there.
