Sydney Metro - Harbour Tunnel

    I was wondering; would it be easier, or cheaper to build the metro tunnel in the same manner as the Harbour (road) Tunnel, using precast tunnel segments lowered into a trench and sealed afterwards, rather than a TBM going through sandstone 40 odd metres below the surface? I thought using segmented construction would allow a shallower approach and hence make stations either side easier, as well as the general advantage of losing a long steep gradient to climb.

    Thoughts anyone?

    The TBMS are a clean option for the harbour and local area. the road project does have steep sections and the work site was the road sections of the tunnel ends.

    The section under the harbour is being drilled by special earth pressure balance TBM through the sediment rather than trying to get down to the sandstone.

    I know they were thinking about doing that but have the actually made the decision

    Location: Central Tablelands of NSW
    Technology and costs change all the time and maybe its more cost effective to use a TBM to create the tunnel than it was to make and place the sections that are now in use for the current motor vehicle tunnel.

    Of course what will play a considerable part in choosing which is the preferred method will be that favoured by those approving the project.
