Leigh Creek Coal Train - The End Is Nigh

  hbedriver Chief Train Controller

Just back from taking some photos of the north bound service over around 50km north of Port Augusta. As of around 20:00 hours tonight, it was very much still running. 8258/8229/8201 leading countless wagons. nice in the evening light, setting sun and all that. The power station seems to be producing more smoke than I recall in the past; dunno whether that is because they are getting down to the dregs of the "coal" or just trying to burn the lot. Local belief is that they have to burn all the coal that's been mined as part of their remediation, so the quantity of trains remaining depends on how much mined coal remains at Leigh Creek. That could be months; or it could be that I just saw the last empty run. Any updates appreciated.

Unfortunately for me it didn't move over Friday/Saturday whilst I was there.

The ABC story suggested that at least some of the stockpile was at the mine end.

Regardless, I wouldn't expect trains to be running right through to May. They'll get it transferred as fast as the capacity at the power station end allows them to do so, to avoid a mishap with the rail line causing the power station to shut down early and leave Alinta with a pile of coal sitting at Leigh Creek with no other use.

The reality is that they also could run beyond May, although I stress the word 'could'.

The vibe out there is that Alinta are not really sure what they are doing and are looking at several options.

1fp1 is running tonight with 8258 on the lead.

Are the trains still running from Leigh Creek? That's quite incredible considering the mine stops mining in November.

I thought I read somewhere the train is about once a day. Anyone knows if this rate has dropped off, assuming it's still running?

In January workers at Northern and Playford were told the proposed closure date of March 31 had been pushed out to May 8 this year. Alinta said the extension was due to larger coal stockpile volumes than anticipated.

I thought most of the stockpile is at the station not the mine?

Then why are they still running trains?

I was just repeating what I read in an earlier thread. I assume then the mine had much more coal stockpile than they anticipated but shouldn't the train start to reduce its run now, given it's only 2 months away from station shutdown and they have coal stockpile at the station as well?

The train is running at a reduced schedule.

I would have thought stating previously "as required" would have been sufficient information.

Thanks Bingley Hall. It's useful to know that they are running at reduced schedule. For any train watchers, I wouldn't wait till May to see the last of the Leigh Creek train then, the last train could very well be in March or April.

As an update I have no been told it is back to running six train per week (no train out Saturday/ back Sunday), but in Port Augusta at the weekend the empties were parked up both Friday and Saturday. The stockpile at the power station didn't look particularly big.

Has the power station shutdown date been revised ?
  tpw Station Master

Amazing that it's back to 6 trains a week. Digging up new coal or running down the mine stockpile faster?

Freightgate, I thought I read somewhere that the power station is due to shut in early May.

8 May is the latest date going around. Trains expected to cease around two weeks prior pending stockpile size.

They wouldn't be digging anymore coal up, all the heavy earth moving equipment has been trucked out of the mine now, they just be carting what left in the stockpile up there, which would be that great now. Easter might be a good time to get in your car with your camera and get some shots of it running, I doubt it will run for more than few weeks after easter.

Good call. Not many more weeks left from looks of it to get some shots.

NR35,

My guess being Good Friday it wouldn't have ran yesterday or indeed over any of the four day Easter break. Just an assumption however.

The coal train is running 5 days a week, Monday to Friday. It gets into Port Augusta in the mornings. If you can wait until next week, I will be able to get the current timetable, as it is not the same each day.
It is not running on weekends.

Hope this helps.

Heard there's still 17 more trains to go running 3 days a week the last apparently will be on the 15th of April

If there going to be another 17 trains to Leigh Creek, then it will finish later than the 15th of April if it only running 3 days a week.

It doesn't look good for the power station then? I thought there were some companies looking to buy it and keep it running. When will it actually stop operating from the coal that is planned now?
