I'm traveling back to Melbourne again late next month for 5 nights and have a few questions.

During my overnight stay last time I went on the Belgrave line and I believe I was on an Xtrapolis train I really enjoyed the fast acceleration it felt so much quicker than the electric train we have here in Adelaide and I want to know what other lines it operates on (I'll be doing them all anyway) more specifically is it still in operation on the Frankston line?

Another question which is the longest V/Line (In KMs)

Lastly if I wanted to get to Chadstone Shopping Centre how would I go about getting there?

For Chadstone, it depends on where your staying, catch a train to Hughesdale and walk north, stay on that train to Oakleigh and take most of the buses there, train to Holmesglen and catch the 903 or walk, from Box Hill: 903.  http://ptv.vic.gov.au/assets/Maps/Localities/PDFs/33_Monash_LAM.pdf

Warrnambool  255kms,  Swan Hill  345kms,  Albury  sg  317kms, Bairnsdale  276 kms .
Day returns available to all the above .  Caveat  Emptor -  Avoid Albury either the train will be faulty or morph into VBus at a drop of a hat !!!!  Swan Hill seems to run fairly reliably followed by Warrnambool and  Bairnsdale .
All the above are loco hauled.  Alternatively  Echuca at  240kms is V/Locity and you can do a dat return  BUT only on  Saturdays and Sundays and Public Holiday Mondays .

There is a free bus service to Chadstone Shopping Centre, it departs from Federation Square every hour or so, ( or  literally around at the bus stop on the cnr of Flinders St and Russell Sts  ) You can get a brochure from the tourist info located at Fed Square , where all the Day Tourist Bus's depart from

Melbourne is one of the worlds relatively interesting places for a rail holiday, it has an extensive suburban rail network, most of which is interesting. Then there is the RFR lines, Geelong, Ballarrat/Ararat, Bendigo and Taralgon. Ararat and Bendigo both being a very interesting trips (when they get the VLocity situation sorted). As already mentioned the is Bairnsdale, Albury,  Swanhill and Warnambool. There is also Echuca and Maryborough but neither have a day return train from Melbourne during the week.

Then of course there is the worlds most extensive tram system, one could try routes 86 (Docklands to Bundoora), 109 (Port Melbourne to Boxhill), 75 (Docklands to Vermont South) and for a real tour of Melbourne inner suburbs route 16 (Melbourne University to Kew).

I have always wished to do something like a week or so just travelling around Victoria rail and tram system. Occsaionaly when in Melbourne with time to spare I do one of the metro train or tram lines, its ALWAYS interesting.

Thanks for the replies the 2 reasons I'm going to Melbourne is for a ride in the premium carriage on the overland and back to Adelaide and to ride every suburban train line in Melbourne. I'll be staying at a place near Southern Cross station so I'll have to figure out the best way to get to Chadstone Shopping Centre from there. I plan to also visit the fountain gate shopping centre luckily for me it's right near one of the stops on the Pakenham line

The xTraps run on the Belgrave, Lilydale, South Morang, Hurtsbridge, Glen Waverly and Alamein lines.

One also runs on the Frankston line early in the morning and theyre supposed to have started running out to werribee and williamstown two and half months ago but no one really knows about that

@Milkomeda You can take a train to Caulfield or Oakleigh then catch a bus to Chadstone.

Fryer fresh Krispy Kream is all I can think of, plus it's still a hike from Narre Warren station.
