Go back and have a read of the first two pages of this thread and you'll get a clue to answer that question.

The power station is useless without the Leigh Creek coal mine

The mine has a limited lifetime, as well as the Power station equipment's use by date

Sad that this service isn't far from finishing, although it has seen better days like the general railway scene in SA.

Further to my posting on 26 March, I apologise for not being able to give any further info, Alinta are not playing ball with my request for this. Local contact says, as sar602 also says, the coal train running is changings daily.

I have just received a telephone call fro Alinta, with the man stating that the last coal train will be running in daylight hours on Wednesday 27th April. This train will be stopping at the Stirling North siding area for photo shoots. This event will be advertised in relevant papers as there is interest Australia wide.
He also confirmed that the running schedules changed daily and that is the reason for being unable to supply  details of the daily runs.

Apparently there's still 100k tons left at the mine so probably 7-8 trains left. Thanks for your inquiries bob k good to have a official date.

From a reliable source this afternoon....

Only two weeks to go. There are six trains left to run with the last being on the 27/4 (as stated above).
Looks like the plan will be Mon-Wed for the last two weeks. This week was the same except yesterday's was cancelled.
Last week it worked Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri.

Another update....

Tuesday, Wednesday this week...

Tuesday next week

That's all folks!

I get the feeling the 'last train ' on the 27th is more of a circus event?

I propose that the final train on the 27th be hauled by NR locos. Such a rare working of those locomotives on that line will be a historic opportunity for all the spotters who will attend.

Anyone from this site planning on going over to heading to the last train?

Yes, at this stage I am planning to go, I only live 80kms away.

According to the newspaper article the last train passes through Bowmans Road between 11:30 and 11:50am.

Wondering if they haven't worded it accurately and it's taking about the last train leaving Port Augusta for Leigh Creek at that time or if it is actually completing it's final journey at that time?

If this is the case I'm guessing Tuesdays service wouldn't run in daylight but be an overnighter..

Pardon the Dad joke but can anybody shed some light?

Hi all, I have just checked with my contact in Port Augusta. The coal train will be heading south into the power station, completing its final journey (as such). It will be passing the end of Bowmans Rd as advertised.
  Southern Aurora Locomotive Driver

Thanks Bob is there any word on what time it will head up there on Tuesday?

Yeah don't know about next week they might just run Wednesday and that will be it so it will probably leave Tuesday night at 11-12 to arrive back at the power house by 11, their prepping for the event next week fencing going up gazebo etc. if ya want to chase it back id sugest staying up at Coply Tuesday night then chasing it back in the morn. Also preparations are been made to remove the point off the ARTC main once the last train has roled.

With this coming Monday being a public holiday will the train still run, or may it operate over the weekend instead?
If indeed there is a train scheduled to run prior to the final one next Tuesday the 26th?

This has just been posted in another forum

Alinta Energy is planning to operate the final coal train into Port Augusta power station on Wednesday 27th April 2016. The last train will depart Port Augusta at 9am on Tue 26th April, go to Leigh Creek to load, and return to a location about 15 km from Stirling North (on the Alinta line) where the train will stage overnight and come into the power station the next morning.

It is planned that a formal community event be held at a location between Stirling North and the power station (again, adjacent to the Alinta line).

This is an Alinta event which is to be attended by the Port Augusta Mayor and other community members. PN would be looking for the train to cross over the ARTC main line traverse area at about 11.10am on Wednesday 27th April destined for the power station.

The above info from Bingley is correct. The coal train is going up to Leigh Creek as per above and on the return, it is overnighting at Emeroo about 15k north of Stirling North, and then coming in as previously mentioned.
