What volunteering can an under 18 do at Steamrail Victoria?

Hi everyone,
Feel free to remove if not allowed, this is my first post and I'm still getting to know Railpage Smile

I would love to lend a hand at Steamrail Victoria and become a volunteer. I know that voulunteers must be aged 15 or over and I am over 15, but I'm wondering what jobs someone under 18 CAN actually help out with there? I'm assuming some jobs would require people to be over 18.

Thanks,
Pik00022

Why remove is a great question.

Pik00022 - great question, simply put go there, and find out.  Apart from driving guarding and some tools, there would be a lot to do. Seek out the people your age and hang out with them. Help, do what you can....
A great idea !

ps who knows, a Steamrail member may PM you to arrange a visit ( not me I'm not a member but there are plenty around)

Thanks, that sounds like a plan Smile My grandfather and great grandfather worked for the VR and I've had an interest in trains since I can remember, so il wait a while for that Steamrail member to PM me Wink

Don't wait, give them a call/email to arrange a visit, then ask about joining. Have a look. Skills, etc you'l learn there - not formal quals or skills, just working on things with others.

Let us know how you go......

Good luck to you with volunteering! I've been volunteering at RHWA Bassendean since I was 16, and it's been an awesome four years now. You learn so much you would never learn anywhere else, make lifelong friends and are we're going to be responsible for keeping the heritage alive in the years to come. Hope it goes well!

Go for it Pik00022!  We need young, enthusiastic people like you. There are many of us out here who have been active volunteers in the preservation movement, and we are, unfortunately, not getting any younger. I used to crawl into loco fireboxes and think nothing of it but, at 75 years old, it's not my bag these days. I hope that you can gain the enjoyment and knowledge that we have, and that you can be instrumental in keeping rail preservation alive. Good luck!

Thanks everyone, I sent my membership application form in the mail yesterday (as I've been planning on becoming a member for a while) Hopefully when I have some free time I'l organise a time to head over to Newport (VCE has sucked up most of my free time :/ )

Once again, Thankyou everyone for the replies, I wasn't expecting a single response!
