All things U-SETS / U-BOATS

  SydneyCider Chief Train Controller

I thought i'd be interesting to create this thread considering that Nov 1, 1996 will mark exactly 20 years since we last saw the U-sets tearing across our network (there was also the Nov 3 '96 SETS farewell tour). Quite a few of the U-set cars have survived, be it motor cars or the TF and ETB Trailers and I thought it'd be interesting to post various information and status updates on these cars, including if they have been preserved, if they have been restored or made operational. It's possible we may eventually see RailCorp/HET get the Heritage U2 set running for special runs in the future, much like Red Set F1 Tours. For the record, I never did get the chance to ride on the U-sets since I never had any reason to use intercity services and was still young as they began withdrawing them in 1994. However, I remember riding Red Sets and the old S sets and seeing the U-sets speed past and overtake these trains on numerous occasions between Redfern and Burwood/Strathfield. Their appearance, metallic whine of their motors and kangaroo suspension as they sped past is not easily forgotten, especially in the days of manual doors and windows.

If anyone has any interesting information on the U set cars, including when particular cars entered revenue service, their withdrawal date or when they were condemned, please feel free to post such information. IIRC Railway Digest was good source of info on status of rolling stock during the early 90's, particularly for the reds, not sure if they continued to post such info in 1994-97 editions for the U-sets. Also it'd be interesting to know which particular train sets replaced their services....I take it most (if not all?) services run by U-sets were replaced by Tangara G-sets as they were deployed 1994-95?

NOTE: I have only included info on motor cars, not trailers. The post is long and perhaps would be excessively so if trailers were to be included. Hope the thread may generate some interesting chatter:)

EDIT: I have made a large update to the list thanks to a list posted by Chris Stratton (July 2018) on the facebook page NSWRailwaysPastAndPresent, so credit to him.

Interesting information there Sydney Cider,

I owned CF 5040 between 11th February 1999 and 23rd January 2012.

Unfortunately certain parts were removed from the unit between the time I purchased it and the time it arrived at my property. The main parts that were taken were from the driver's cab. Also missing were the seat reservation numbers.

All passenger seats, doors, luggage racks, toilets and the drinking water fountain (even with cups) remained intact however bogies were removed as part of the sale deal when I bought it.

Due to a house move it was sold and removed from my property by a person from Young NSW who intended on restoring it back to its original condition.

Hope this helps,

SA.

Thank you both for the replies!

SA - That is very interesting and to be honest, I'm quite surprised as to how many of the U-set cars have actually survived, in one form or another. I take it the new owner is restoring it back to original condition as so far as an outhouse/weekender/office?

NSWRcars - Thanks for the list. Looks like they have found homes all over the place. Wonder if there are many fans of U-sets in VIC? Smile

I'll update my post accordingly with this info. Smile

Also, something nice for this thread, a couple of videos showing u-sets I found on youtube.

Also, another interesting update. The following is a video posted by bwDVD showing the movement of electric cars by diesel locos. Most of this video shows the movement of red set cars (most likely to scrap), although from 8:52 it does show the movement of RailCorp preserved cars C3102, T4527, D4052 and C3218 through Redfern Station. There are few videos showing footage of U sets in action, however from about 10 mins in this video shows movement of u-set cars. Considering two of the motor cars being moved feature the original lift-up windows, all of these cars are perhaps those singled out for preservation.

I have wondered how the term U Boat has come to be connected to the Single Decker Interurban's as I can NEVER remember them being called that from the day they first began to run in service as the Fish from Mt Victoria to Sydney and return.
I was a Junior working at Katoomba the day the first 4 car set ran under its own power for testing and crew training and walked through it while the crew had crib and the 'engineers'  carried out tests.
Back then a U-Boat was a steel sided wagon along with a K-Truck and was bigger than an S truck.
I thought when I first saw the plate on the front of the power car that the 'U' stood for Interurban.
  SydneyCider Chief Train Controller

Hi Gordon, that is an interesting bit of info, what did people usually call them at the time, just interurbans? Even still as a young guy in the early 1990's I remember some calling them "Silver Bullets", that probably came about because they typically raced by on intercity services and their long sleek stainless steel bodies. I think some called them u-boats because they supposedly rocked a bit side to side at higher speeds?...although not sure. I never did get to ride on one, so I look forward to the day when a heritage u set is (hopefully) made operational again!

Also, here is some earlier footage I found in a youtube clip from BevanWall (bwDVD) showing out takes from the 1974 film "A Steam Train Passes", showing some nice footage of the loco 3801. Go to the video to about 5:20 and you'll see a u set overtake 3801, still complete with it's original single light and all (exclusive) lift-up windows.

Exactly 20 years to this day that the last U-set ran under it's own power (if i'm not mistaken) with the SETS farewell U-boat tour Sunday, Nov 3, 1996.

it's interesting to note with the u-set withdrawals that among the first u-set cars to go were the motor cars with original lift-up windows and some of the trailers too, which explains why they were virtually impossible to come across as things moved further into 1995. It also seems that the Tangara G-sets didn't exclusively replace the U-sets but rather their delivery allowed for the U-sets to to be withdrawn. It seems some of the "outer suburban" services carried out by U-sets were taken over by K-sets and then later replaced by the G sets. While V sets took over the intercity services done by U-sets.

Have made some updates to the list. CF5020 was indeed moved to Bilpin and has been updated to guest accommodation. Also added links to RailCorp inventory Info (which also has some photos) for CFs 5015, 5017, 5035 and the two trailer cars.

Also the following is a link to a thread on another forum where the user Blue Ribbon posted an SRA inventory list (and disposals) of it's electric rolling stock collection in Dec 2008. (http://www.busaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36804&p=417077) Some interesting info there as far as U-set collection goes. CF5008, CF5036 and CF5037 were very heavily stripped for parts for the heritage U2 set and the bogies retained since they apparently have a better wheel life than the heritage listed cars. The list also confirms that when the U2 set does eventually run it looks like the two power cars in the set will be CF5015 and CF5017, while CF5035 will be restored as a spare. By having CF5015 and 5017 in the set you will have one car (5017) as a representation of a near original version of the U-set motor car with windows, seats and paint scheme (although it doesn't have the original brown/maroon lower saloon colour - CF5003 was only one to retain that). On the other hand, CF5015 will represent an updated U-set motor car with Beclawat windows and 1980's updated flat back blue seats and colour scheme (cream ceilings). Looks like the two trailer cars will also be in original condition (again, save for maroon lower half saloon colour). I'd also hazard a guess that the goal may end up being, if possible, to attach one of the larger MV pantographs to CF5017 while one of the smaller red ones will probably be attached to CF5015. In some ways, this would mirror the differences seen in the Red Set F1 between C3426 as compared to C3218 or C7396.

A number of updates to the lists on the various U-set carriages.

- CF5023 and CF5025 were the 2 power cars fitted in 1967 with jumper cables for trials preparatory to the S sets (which seem to feature these cables and anchors). A permanent anchor for the cable under the off-side window of CF5025 and a receptacle under driver's window of CF5023. CF5025 can be seen at 1:42 and at 18:44 in tressteleg1's u-set interurbans video posted in the thread with the distinctive anchor under the window. I can only assume that despite this motor car being one of about only 5 to have retained the original lift-up windows it was not chosen for preservation because of this attachment and ultimately was purchased for the filming of the Matrix movies. Photo of CF5025 by David Johnson https://www.flickr.com/photos/gunzel412/3275516181/in/album-72157607284662547/

- CF5008 was historically a significant motor car as far as the U-sets were concerned as it was part of the inaugural run of "The Fish" in 1958 and it seems later was also part of a 4-car set, the final revenue service Nov 1, 1996 of a U-set - a Newcastle to Sydney Terminal service. This car was quite distinctive in that it featured a large dent next to the driver's off side window and can be seen at 1:17 in the farewell to U Boats video by bevanWall and at 0:55 in tressteleg1's single deck interurbans U set video.

- The Complete train for inaugural run of The Fish on 15.9.1958 between Sydney Terminal to Mt. Victora was U1 9 cars CF5006-TF6009-ETB6022-CF5005-CF5008-TF6016-ETB6021-TF6008-CF5007.

- The train composition for the train celebrating the opening of the electrification of the line to Gosford January 23, 1960 was CF5026-ETB6028-TF6014-CF5003-CF5039-ETB6023-TF6018-CF5032.

- CF5016 was the motor car which was stripped of parts then scrapped in 1982 after it collided with a 46 class electric loco at Gosford. 5 motor cars were scrapped before the start of the 1994 withdrawals. CF5034 due to fire in 1973, CF5016 due to accident in 1982, CF5009 due to accident in 1989 and CF5032 due to accident in 1993. One other car was scrapped due to accident in 1978, it is unknown which motor car that was. On a happier note, a photograph of one of the RailCorp preserved motor cars for the heritage U2 set - CF5015 at Wollongong in active service by David Johnson. This one is also quite distinctive with a couple of the dents it features:https://www.flickr.com/photos/gunzel412/24829307303/in/album-72157607284662547/

Pardon me if it has been mentioned but I recall a U Boat car (can't recall if it was a C or a T) along the highway some distance past Sutherland that was deliberately set on fire by arsonists and subsequently scrapped.

I've never caught a train or driven up to or past Sutherland, as far as I recall so I can't answer that question, perhaps someone else might be able to.

Just another small update on the Matrix filming. Found this website by Paul Turtle with info on the filming of the Matrix, some very interesting information including photographs of CF5025 taken after it's use for filming purposes and modifications made to it. All credit to him for the info. http://members.ozemail.com.au/~pturtle/electrics/matrix.htm

A few tid bits is that he mentions that in addition to the modified CF5025, 3 of the heritage listed U-boat cars were borrowed from the SRA. The 3 heritage listed cars were not modified in any way, however, they did make up and paint a "fake" cityrail logo on all 4 cars. 3 of the 5 heritage cars used for filming still have (or had) this logo and reveals that the 3 heritage cars that were used as extras were CF5017, TF6013 and ETB6029. CF5035 and CF5015 (unsurprisingly) were not used. After filming the 3 were returned to the SRA and CF5025 was subsequently sold. A segment of the film showing these 4 cars in some form (from 4:10 onwards):-

Funnily enough late in 2015 whoever owned CF5025 started to sell of parts and components from the car:-

As far as I understand, back in the day it was not uncommon for a 46 to come to the rescue of a U-set which ran into mechanical/technical trouble..?

Here is an interesting promo poster regarding the 1960 electrification of railway line from Hornsby to Gosford identifying 2 forms of electric inter-urban trains that would service the route. Here's hoping, that if at all possible, January 2020 could see a heritage U-set and 46 class make a run to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the electrification of that stretch of line Smile

Info on each car has been accordingly updated.

I suppose that before V sets, 'The Chips' would have been operated by U sets as well.

Going by that promotional advert for the Gosford extension, $4m cost to save $750kpa, how does Geelong continue to remain DMU'ed? The frequency of services to Geelong probably exceeds the Central Coast today!

Another interesting post for today, hope everyone has had a great Easter!

This post is more to do with the G-set Outer Suburban Tangaras, however it links in with the retirement with the U-sets

A number of interesting sources of info on G-sets and retirement of U-sets which I will summarise in point form below the links:-

It's interesting to look back on some of this info but in short:-

- the last Tangara T set was delivered in February 1994
- the first Tangara G set outer suburban was slated for delivery in April 1994
- the first Tangara G set was slated to enter service in June 1994
- it was stated specifically in the "Tangara for central coast services" transcript 13 May 1994 that the outer suburban Tangaras would allow withdrawal from service of old non-air-conditioned single-deck intercity rolling stock and for return to suburban use of sets currently operating between Sydney and Central Coast via North Shore line as well.
- It was stated in South Coast Tangara transcript 17 November 1994 that first 6 sets of outer suburban Tangaras already operating on south coast line and the improvements they have over T sets which include toilet facilities incorporating wheelchair access, reversible high-backed seating, passenger activated doors as well as luggage and drinking water facilities. It also mentions that ALL single-deck intercity, as well as suburban type carriages without toilet facilities operating locally and to and from sydney would be replaced.
- by October and November 1994, all 370 Tangara T set carriages were in service and at that point only 24 Tangara G set cars were in service, forming 6 4-car sets
- in-line with the 24 G sets cars now in service by end of 1994, 24 U-set cars were withdrawn (11 motor, 13 trailer)
- The OS Tangara G7 set (waterfall accident 2003) with the AC Drive System was slated to enter revenue service by April 1995
- further U-set cars withdrawn in 1995. It's interesting to note, although perhaps unsurprising that generally speaking, the U-set cars with Original Lift-Up windows were overwhelmingly the first to be retired.
- There was a ministerial announcement 30 October 1995 in conjunction with delivery of last outer suburban Tangara G set during that month, with mention that development was underway for 4th generation train which it was hoped would be available for service prior to 2000 Sydney Olympics.

- Another interesting fact regarding the Harris Park / Merrylands Y-Link, this was officially opened with a Tangara G set (G30 and G28) running on the line November 2, 1996, a day after the last U-set service ran. However, due to the SETS U-boat farewell tour on November 3, the U's did get the (one and only) chance to run on that link

Originally, 1960s, I knew them as 'interurbans' or as 'silver trains' until the double deck V sets appeared then they became 'single deck interubans'. They remained this during the decade I occasionally commuted in them Blue mountains to Sydney.

I can't remember hearing 'U boat' until after their being withdrawn from service and then thought it a silly name and waited for equally silly adoption of 'V weapon' or similar for the double deckers. Much later having gained an interest in language/linguistics and having access to the web I found that there were in the USA locos referred to as U boats and wondered whether the Australian use is as a loan word from there.
