Like the new camera at Bendigo has recorded an UP transfer from SSR to Melbourne with 2 PN G class in tow.

Since we now have a view about what is coming the thread has been started.

A question.
If the PN locos are ex servicing/maintenance why haul them to Melbourne ie why not just provide a crew and drive them?
I assume that there must be a reason (but am a little scared as to what it might be).

Are there PN crews based at Bendigo anymore?

Hi All,

I'm not able to see the images.  Just a black rectangle.   Any suggestions how I can fix this.

Thanks

From a reliable poster on FB (who I'm 99% certain is with SSR), SSR only provides a 'shuttle' service when PN is unwilling/unable to do so due to a lack of crews etc. This was the first transfer operated by SSR since the Bendigo line re-opened in late October, with the previous ones being done by PN themselves. The transfers generally run weekly.

PN also regularly make use of their own grain trains to get locos to/from Bendigo when there's one headed up this way.

As an aside, XR553 was supposed to be bought back to Bendigo on 0083 yesterday, but 'missed the cut'.

Thanks Greensleeves.
Makes partial sense in lieu of SSR actually driving the PN locos but I suppose that there would be legal/administrative/accreditation/insurance problems with such an arrangement.
Long gone are the days when 'everyone could drive everything'.

A couple of PN drivers on the 9.38 Down Bendigo service this morning. Sounded like they were combining a post service pick up with some route familiarization for a driver who had recently transferred to PN.

A few weeks ago I saw one of the SSR PN transfers through Castlemaine on the Up just before 8 pm. Was fairly flying to get to Elphinstone lo loop for a cross.

July has seen a couple of H-set transfers with double heading V/line P-class locos on a Saturday.

It sounds like the coming month might be the last that we see of P-Class locos hauling V/line services.   But they'll still be around as PTV/Metro locos apparently.

i saw a pic over on Vicsig of one of these transfers Carnot, are the H sets being serviced at SSR?

The Ps being made redundant by new Vlocities coming online? When I came through Kyneton on Sun I noticed 2 x 3 car Vlocity stabled in the yard instead of the usual 1 x Vlocity and 1 x 2 Sprinter set.

So will the Sprinters start running Wyndham Vale etc.

Yet another evening in the Railway Hotel beer garden sees yet another SSR PN transfer.

Didn't get the numbers, she was fair flying as usual on the Up through Castlemaine at around 18.30 speeding to make the cross at Elphinstone.

Up SSR PN transfer just flew through The Maine at 18.35. A bit hard to see from the front bar but looked like the CRL on the lead then PN then SSR T class followed by what looked like a couple of Metro cars but could have been anything. Cheers, I'll drink to SSR!
