Aurizon trainee locomotive driver

Hi all,

I have applied for a trainee locomotive driver job with Aurizon in Wollongong.  I have completed some online assessments and next being called for VTS testing.
Can anyone offer some advice on the recruitment process, what in entails and how long it will take.

I also have a holiday planned for two weeks in 2 months. How much do you think this will interfere, or should I not book flights?
Any info or help will be much appreciated!!

Personally, I would go on your holiday as planned. When I left PN for my new employer, I was called by HR to arrange an interview and I made it quite clear that I would be on holidays at their requested time, and would they mind doing a phone interview? They had no problem with that, the interviewers even got a bit of a chuckle after I'd explained that I was at SeaWorld and to ignore the screaming in the background - I wasn't killing someone.

I had to Google what that VTS testing thing was, as I've never done it, but have worked with people who have (and some of them I wouldn't trust to drive anything bigger than a go-kart, yet alone a coal train!). Given that they haven't called you to set a date for the VTS testing yet, should they do so there is probably more than a fortnight in which you can arrange to do the testing, that is to say, either before or after your holiday.

IF you make it to an interview stage, you can expect the standard questions, why do you want to work for QR, etc. But also job-specific questions, Have you done shiftwork before? If yes, how do you handle your fatigue? Tell us about a time something didn't go right for you? Use the SAO model to frame your response, describe the situation, your actions and then the outcome. IF it didn't go well, you may be quizzed on why, or what you learnt from it. Don't be afraid to admit you've made an error somewhere, so long as you can describe you learnt from it. They might also show you a printout from the Driver's Route Knowledge Diagram and say "You're going to get changed out by a new crew [here] , what issues can you see with that? Consider things like is it on an embankment, is it on a curve (bad sighting of oncoming trains), could we perhaps move it a little further down to [here]  and explain why you think that might be safer.

Finally, and this applies to any operator, be bloody sure this is what you want to do for a job. There is shiftwork, then there is railway shiftwork. You won't have a social life, and it will severely impact on your family too through lack of opportunities for social gatherings, kids need to be quiet because you'll be sleeping, etc. In saying that, I have done it for over a decade and wouldn't do anything else, but I have a good roster now.

Thank you so so so much for your reply. I really appreciate it.

I had an email saying a VTS test was coming, although a week later, another email saying the recruitment had been pulled indefinitely. Pretty disappointed as I had done a lot of research and really wanted the job. Hoping they will recruit again and I will have a chance.

Really? They pulled the pin on it! They were targeted ATSI and female candidates, one would have thought they would jump at diversifying the workforce if they got the right candidates.

A friend of mine has sat twice for employment and he said one of the questions asked was, 'How to build an engine'

I think the vacancies being offered at the time were for what ever they were calling Station Staff.

He had worked for the Railway and was a Signalman on General Relief based at Orange before being made redundant which he didnt want at all.

I think I may have found the answer! They copped some flak over a similar advertisement in Central Queensland about the same time the Wollongong Trainee positions were advertised. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/business/aurizon-cops-heat-on-womenonly-job-ad-20160907-grakk8

One thing I would not be surprised to see that these advertisement and interviews are being conducted by a 'Third Party' who specialise in this field for the employer to make their choices.

I have to ask what sort of questions could they ask relative to driving a locomotive if the prospective employee has never been with cooeee of an Loco when you dont know the difference between a Tail Disk and a Train Pipe?

I rang today to find out if the intake has been completed and they said it's still in process.  Everyone will get an email with their individual decision regardless.

No news still, but I wish that if they have culled me tell me already! Hehe...  these long waits to be told you've been unsuccessful are truly annoying!

I heard back about the Muswellbrook position, I got sent for a medical. People I know who are drivers for aurizon are saying I am pretty much a shoe in. Although I'm told they still cull another 50% of people after that. The doctor will only clear me for a new medical every three years had postnatal depression so therefore I'm sure I'm out.
How's everyone else's applications going?

Congrats Harro,

This process is so drawn out its ridiculous. I applied back in June, then when traineeships in quirindi opened up I applied there. Got a knock back and then an email saying because of a computer error I didn't have to wait a year. So I resat and meanwhile the Quirindi jobs closed and my only option is Muswellbrook

Hi kimteddy84

Thanks harro

A lady I met during medicals was told before Xmas. So at least I won't stress if I don't hear anything now. Best of luck

So she was told she had been offered a position
  kimteddy84 Beginner

No like me she was just sitting a medical. She was told all the spots would be given before Xmas, typical of aurizon though the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing :/

Ok sorry read it the wrong way lol, not going to think about it anymore just going to enjoy Christmas holidays
  kimteddy84 Beginner

Yeah same here, they are all on holidays so nothing we can do Smile

How did you go Harro? I heard back and didn't get a spot at Muswellbrook but I got a spot in quirindi so I'm happy as Smile

Damn I am sorry to hear that. Hopefully that means you won't have to wait long till something comes up.

I've not heard back so I rang up and they said my application was still being processed (Muswellbrook) considering how long it's been I think they have forgotten to send out the "you have been unsuccessful" email.
