Hi all,

Does anyone know about any rail accidents involving Sydney's Red Rattler trains? I have seen about three photographs of these. I have also watched a video on Youtube about a incident about C 3424's traction motors catching fire. Does anyone know any info about this as well?

Thanks to those that answer!

When I was around two years old, I remember being taken up to the Clanville Road bridge in Roseville and looking at a stopped electric train. Subsequently I realised this was the 1950 Roseville accident where a train bound for Hornsby hit the rear of a stopped train waiting to enter the terminal platform at Lindfield. Sadly the stopped train was waiting for a train to leave the terminating platform, which did so, running into the wreckage of the other two trains. The good news was that the platform indicator at Lindfield was wrong, showing a main line train departing first, so the departing train was almost empty.

A friend's mother whose kitchen window faced the track at the collision location, was washing the breakfast dishes and saw the first collision. She called to her husband on his way out at the front door "Wally, don't bother to hurry to catch a train...."

One accident that occurred to a train I was travelling on was during the afternoon when I was going home from high school, so around four in the afternoon in 1962 or 1963. A medium size truck had broken through the fence while moving east on Nelson St onto the overbridge between Artarmon and Chatswood and fell down the embankment hitting the side of the train near the middle motor cars. I assume the guard saw it and used the emergency brake.  The truck driver was injured and couldn't get out of the truck, and was trying to attract attention by hitting the truck cab door with his right hand.

I don't know how the situation was cleared up. We were directed to walk on the up line to Chatswood, from where I probably walked to my home in Roseville.

There didn't appear to be much damage to the train compared to the truck. Certainly no windows were broken.

I heard a story from an old Signalman about 99A that used to work between Granville and Fairfield, coming back to Granville and running back into the middle terminal road on the Sydney end running straight over the stop block into the dirt then crew jumping off abandoning ship running off down the street, old mate reckoned they were drunk, no known date, goes way back.
