Railway Square Tunnel (a.k.a. Lee Street Bridge), Sydney

I think this line, from Sydney Yard to Darling Harbour, was opened with the original line in 1855. Could someone  verify my understanding of its history, as follows:

1. opened as single line
2. duplicated
3. reduced to gauntlet track prior to electrfication in the 1950's, due to lack of space for OHW structures over double track
4. de-electrified, becoming Power House Siding (worked as a branch from Sydney Yard)
5. now traverses "The Goods Line", an outdoor recreation area

Dates of some of the above events would be interesting.

The Railway Square subway was gradually lengthened to cover Broadway as well as Lee Street.

AFAIK, only the original bridge was too narrow for the OHW.

Cannot confirmed that the line was originally single track.

Looking at the ARHS T&SV3 (Track & Signal v3) DVD, a diagram dated 1903 shows a bridge over George St West, 51 yards wide.

A bridge over Lee Street is not mentioned.


A 1934 T&SV3 diagram shows a bridge covering Lee Street and George Street West (Broadway). There is a small unbridged section in the middle of the tramway balloon loop. This hole was later covered.

Many years ago when such things were easier I walked through most of the tunnel from the Darling Harbour end. The original sandstone lined bridge/tunnel is still in the centre of the tunnel and is noticeably more narrow.
