Apologies for being so far out of touch as to need to ask:

Are 4001 and 4701 both going to Steamfest, or have I been sucked in by a misprint?

Just noticed........

3016 is going to Steamfest too (under a hire agreement with THNSW - now confirmed in writing).

So a potential misnomer with only two steamers (3642 and 5917) has become somewhat more respectable with a third loco to be in attendance.

Happy steaming,

John

ARTC TAA 0287-2017.

Gut feel and last year's precedent tells me that 4001 is the correct number, but I'm hoping someone closer to the preservation movement than ARTC can set me right.

3016 will be running shuttles from Maitland to the up refuge (dead end) opposite the (former) Hanbury Junction signal box and back, presumably to provide numerous short trips behind a steam loco for the many (e.g. with small children) who don't want to over-commit their time.

Surely the shuttles should run down to Hamilton ? Should of left the country end crossover in, Hamilton's re signalling needed more thought.

The amount of thought that should have gone into the interim Newcastle truncation arrangements may be a matter for another thread. But with the Steamfest weekend augmented with additional Hunter / Endeavour services running into a Hamilton layout that struggles to cope adequately with the weekday timetable, I could understand a desire not to overload the place.

I'll stick with my guess that the organisers are trying to cater for parents who might find Maitland - Broadmeadow - Port Waratah - Maitland excessive for the attention span of small children (or themselves), but are drawn by the novelty value of a shorter trip on a steam train, rather than the allure of Beaumont Street. Time will tell whether the Hanbury Junction destination is a financially successful marketing initiative.

"Out and Back" with 3016 on country end and 4520 on Sydney end is just that.
