Hello All,

Firstly my apology's if this question has already asked and answered, if it has please direct me to the post cause i have not found it.

Anyway, on my way to visiting my sick grandfather over the past week I've noticed that chain link fence has been thrown up and some earthwork has occurred at where the new maintenance & stabling yard is to be built at Pakenham East.

I'm just wondering if they have actually started building it or is this just something else?

Thanks

Mark

It had Downer signage on the site for the last few weeks.

I found this document online at http://economicdevelopment.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/1433876/HCMT_Project-Summary.pdf. Check page 10 for an areal view of the future depot, hope this helps. Page 40 also has another view on the depot. Looks interesting by the artist impressions.

Thanks guys for the info, just went past the site today, the wife took some photos (thought I was being weirdo) sorry I will post them tomorrow when I get home can't figure how to do it on a iPhone. I also have seen the site where they are building the sky rail sections the yard was full of them, can take photos of that tomorrow if people like.

Thanks

Mark

There's a video on the Premier's Facebook page today on the new Maintenance and stabling yards. You may wanna have a a nice sneak peek at it.

Wow. I find the title to that video really odd.

unlike nsw we're building new trains in our own state not in south korea

You don't sell the virtues of a great project by diverting attention away from it towards something else.

Looks like the test track connects to the main line via a grade separated junction (underpass). That seems a bit excessive.

Also, is the plan to consolidate all stabling to Pakenham East and Calder Park post Melbourne Metro, or are we going to see allowance made for HCMTs at Westall, Cranbourne, Dandenong, Sydenham and Sunbury?

Yeah, but we aren't allowed to build new level crossings (it looks bad).  Since it's a new road and a new track in the middle of nowhere, shouldn't be expensive to build.

It looks like that track is just a turnback between the workshop and stabling yard. I guess to cover the times they need to turn a set?  The access to the main lines would be at the western end, out of sight of the camera.

Love how the Premier claims there will be a level crossing free Pakenham - Cranbourne line !

Given that trains based at this depot won't be running In the City Loop (that turns the direction of the trains on every run)

The balloon loop will be used to turn the trains, too even out wheel wear etc.

Especially not when your own government is buying trains that are partly Chinese....

I went there today to take some photos from Oakview Lane - which is at the down end and really needs to be sealed since it's the only way to access the site by road.
I kept an eye out for the place with the sky rail sections, but didn't spot anything. Can anyone tell me where it is in case I'm out that way again?

Prefab concrete factory is a few km away from the depot location, here. The site bounded by Koo-wee-rup Road, Commercial Drive, Greenhills Rd & Southeast Blvd:

If anyone has nearmaps it might show up on some recent images.

The 'triangle' site bordered by Princes Fwy, the Railway and Oak View Lane (excluding those three houses along the lane):

So trains will enter from the western end just after the Princes Freeway. Will this require re-electrification? Or does the electrification still continue that far?

Re-electrification "I understand" (happy to be proven wrong)

(The old overhead catenary was life expired, and needed removal for maintenance cost efficiency reasons)

Why not just de-energise it for the inner section anyway as it was (should have) been obvious that suburbia was extending in that direction.
Alternatively, pull down the wires but leave the stanchions.

Could of been an Idea, but likely the stanchions were not In the best condition ether !

Their 1950's siver lead paint had all mostly peeled off, leaving raw steel exposed to Gippsland's damp climate.

Old Stanchions throughout the Melbourne suburban system are been progressively replaced.

Drove past the site along the freeway this weekend and it looks like most of the site is being leveled with a large amount of earth moving activity going on.

Since there's been no news for a while I went there and took some photos on Sunday.
It's still mostly earth works, drainage and some foundations at the moment.
There are too many trees next to the railway line to get a good look from the train so the best footage so far would definitely be the drone video that someone else took in July.
