TheLoadedDog The Ghost of George Stephenson

Just dropping in; Some of the old timers might remember me.   I used to be around this joint like a rash in the Naughties.

Just posting on indulgence, Mr Speaker.  I started a site called Railbastard.  It was only ever meant to be fun, and wasn't anit-RP like some made it out to be (in fact dissing RP is clarified as a NOPE in our rules).

Anyway, there were those who tried to heap excrement upon us.  "It's just another  anti-RP site" (it isn't). "it's juvenile because you are allowed to swear"  (nope, swearing is optional, and is a mere by-product of being treated like an adult), and my favourite, "It'll never reach critical mass."

Well, Railbastard turns ten years old today.  We have survived.  Thanks to those who had faith in this weird little experiment.  And peace to Railpage Australia.  I choose not to come here much these days, but I bear no malice, and have met some very good friends here.

Good to hear from The Loaded Dog - I was afraid that the explosive had gone off before you could drop it!

Thank you gentlemen.  It's nice to hear from y'all.  Specific mention to Valvegear, as I seem to recall we started off on the wrong foot, and I was rather schoolboy-ishly rude to you.  Thank you, kind sir.

In fact, I could be a bit of an asre generally here in those days,  I still am one, but age tempers things a bit.

That is a very gentlemanly post, and I appreciate it greatly.

Both RP and RB have their place generally whilst each also has its own niche features. It will be good to see both succeed in their own ways in parallel.
RP obviously has a wider readership but, to me, RB has the oft mentioned benefit where one can post photos in a much more user friendly and straightforward manner.

I have given up trying to attach a photo to a post there must be a better way but no intention of going elsewhere.

Nice to hear from LoadedDog again, always worry when some faces haven't been around in a while.

Yes, RP photo attachment process is AANNOOYYIINNGG, but I suppose it limits the time I would waste doing so.

Might drop in and check out RB.

I know a number of Aussie rail based forums have come and gone, some are still around but are really very limited. QRIG for example used to be very strong, but these days not so. I think  in part its a sign of the times as Australian rail doesn't have a lot of the exciting things of the past.

Greetings TLD™, nice to see you pop in to say hello.

And happy birthday to RB. I assume that the bar is all free there today, so I best pop over for a drink.

Took a look at railway bastard very quiet.

Tnanks YM.  This illustrates perfectly what got up my nose a bit when we were callled "anti-RP".  Railbastard was (and is) a place you could let off steam a bit,    Put it this way, if I were to wake up tomorrow and find myself a Railpage admin, I'd not remove the swearing ban   (though I might ban a few folks, but that's a story for another day).   I always thought of RB as a kinda sister site to this one,.  Smaller, more familiar, but not an enemy.    IF RP is the big CBD nightclub, Railbastard is the little country pub.

Basicallly, as a place to let off steam, I like to think RB actually made things EASIER for the admins here.   I may be wrong about that, but that was  what I had in mind at the time.

Valvegear, thank you for your graciousness.  Not sure I'd have been able to drum that up.   Vastly apppreciated.

MetroFeme, yair it's quiet. We like it that way.  Probably a thousand members registered, but only a dozen or two regulars.  It's just our little bolt hole.  And is why I've never promoted this forum aside from this thread, and one ten years ago.   Grab a beer and stand with your back to the fireplace.  And it's also why it self-moderates, and it be the rarest of things for me to swing the ban-hammer.

Hullo TLD™, good to see you posting here.

If RB has a thousand signed and more than ten active RB is doing well.

Interesting to note that RB is now decade nt Smile

Yes good to see you still active sir.  I agree, we serve the same people, but for different ends. Railpage acts more like a intro, and RB as a good stepping stone for many, as the many facebook groups do as well. When you have  people from 6 years to 80 years,  from the gunzel to the railwayworker that covers a huge spectrum of people. And  some of the time that doesn't work. But overall we all enjoy the hobby, or your work.

I'm active.

I am like a virus, I willl be here forever. Watching. Judging. Yea though thou may not see me.

I was a highwayman

Along the coach roads I did ride

With sword and pistol by my side

Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade

Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade

The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five

But I am still alive

As per above, good to hear from you TLD™! I tried RB for a short while, but decided it wasn't for me. I did used to log in occasionally, but haven't done so for years now. No reflection on the site, it's just one of many things I don't do.

Don't be too much of a stranger here, I have always enjoyed your style! Smile

Thank you Graham.   I'm cool with people not liking my site.  It's nice of you to articulate it though,    No site is for everybody,

Bear, lovely to hear from you again,   You were always one of my favourite posters.  A gentleman.

I now have a (female) internet friend - a close one,  She calls me "Papa Bear" for reasons I shall not bore you with,   Weirds the hell out of my heterosexuality!   Very Happy  I'm middle-aged and hairy, so y'know. A greybeard..

So loaded dog what are your thoughts on the Geelong line issues and the duplication to Waurn Ponds?

My thoughts?  it might be in Victoria,    Amirite?

Seriously, duplication is a goood thing.  Sydney is now near fullly duplicated.  Melbs shoud do likewise.  We're not cities of three million anymore, and the steam days are over,  And as much as I like  the retro 80s feel in Victoria, you need concrete sleepers, full duplication, and weighted OHW.  No more WOLO.

Oh, and extend your electricfication.  You can travel three hours in a spark from Sydney Central.  I love your loco-hauled V/line stuff but it do be a bit 1950s

You're right, of course, but I would just point , with great respect, that the distance covered in those three hours is a modest 150km, and that the wires have been pulled back on those lines, previously reaching a few km further to Newcastle and Bowenfels. I dream of the day when three hours under wires would get oneself from Sydney TO Melbourne ( or vice-versa).
