Searching for information on the Maribyrnong River Goods Sidings

Hi all,

I'm searching for more information on the Maribyrnong River Goods Sidings for a modelling project.

Thus far I've found a handful of relevant pictures on and this article on

I've also reached out to the Footscray Historical Society and the Victorian Australian Railway Historical Society for permission to look through their archives. They have not yet contacted me back and it will be a couple of weeks before I have the opportunity to go in person.

In the meantime, are there any other resources that anyone knows if that I could look at? I would love to find a map of the sidings to depict the layout, and some clearer pictures of the buildings and area from earlier on (1921-1950s or 60s), but thus far I have not found much.

I am also planning on going to the Victorian State Library but that will have to wait a couple of weeks.

Does anyone have any further resources or experience in this sort of research that would help point me in the right direction?

Almost every document remotely to do with the state government in the past 170 years is sitting in the Public Record Office in North Melbourne.

However the stuff is bundled into files that are not easily identified and in one instance I spent 6 or 7 hours going through files looking for correspondence to confirm a single historic fact. But you should be able to find most things you want in an hour or two, if you order likely looking files from their online catalogue the day before you go in to view the documents.

Photo of signals at the junction circa 2010, from Wongm's Rail Gallery site:

Some photos circa 1974, from Peter J Vincent's site:

These are just guesses, however:
0244_320.jpg appears to have been taken from just south of Siding A looking south.
0244_190.jpg appears to have been taken from Sidings B looking south.
0244_220.jpg & 0244_230.jpg appear to have been taken from just before the Staff Lock (perhaps removed) looking towards Siding C.
