They have a picture of a freight train and no explanation at all, about the article and you found the link, why couldn't they.

Does the freight train have a line of deck chair's and banana lounges on one of the flat tops !

No research, again.

Maybe like the Ghan and IP where they used to slow the train down whilst meals are being served (so your soup didn't spill!)
Also interesting that they travel to Murrayville, then pop you on a bus to travel to Red Cliffs (backtrack via Ouyen) a 195km ride one way!

Difficult to operate an extremely slow special, two T Classes and a rake of heavy sleeping cars etc with 160KPH UP & DOWN passenger trains on generally single track.

At the time of writing this 22:52, the last UP has gone though Ballan and the special will have spent some time at Bank Box loop.

I figure it will get a clear run to Ballarat after the 22:25 ex SCS runs through it around 23:15.

Mike

Postscript: special through Ballan around 00:10.

Yes, I believe I saw two former Vinelander sleeping cars on the Murrayvillelander when it went through Ballan at 00:10 on Saturday morning.

After having a look at the route taken by the special, will the branch at Ouyen change so trains won't have to run around?

Not that I'm aware of.  A quick look at Google Maps reveals that a fair bit of land would need to be purchased.

Also, it sounds like 7th August might be the occupation date for the line.  PN has been rather busy trying to remove grain from silos along the line of late...

Would require a far amount of earthworks as the terrain around Ouyen is "Hilly" and the "new" junction would end up being a few kilometres south of the existing junction.
The line from Murrayville has a reasonable grade as it approaches the Mallee Hwy level crossing west of Ouyen, then a reasonable cutting just east of that crossing. A new connection to the south would require the line to cross a dry lake bed (or hollow) (so a reasonable embankment is required) and the main line south of Ouyen rises as well.
So a fair bit of earthworks is required.

The train actually had two Orange Vinelander Sleepers (and 2 ex Aurora (LAN+NAM), and one ex SOP VAM) in the 11 car consist - the numbers being Roomette SJ282 (which I slept in, very comfortable) and Twinette SJ284. Arrival back into Southern Cross on Sunday was at approximately 14:20 and it then returned to Newport about 1 hour later.

Mike, you can blame a signal failure at Southern Cross which delayed departure for 90 minutes for keeping you up late on Friday night.

The Friday night outward trip to Ballarat was timetabled for 3:12 which included 3 crosses (Deer Park West, Melton, Bank Box), 25 minutes at Rowsley for a cross and a run-through, and via the Loop at Bungaree for a run-through. That all changed due to the late departure, and there was only one run-through at Parwan and a cross while in the Bungaree loop. The 4:35 suggested earlier was probably using the Ballarat departure time (4:35 after the SCS timetabled departure).

Common sense would suggest that they start from the Ararat end, as that would allow work trains to move forward. But I suspect.......

If it's anything like the North East gauge conversion (and stage 1 of the Murray Basin Rail Project) it'll be mostly done with hi-rail excavators working in a whole bunch of sections to speed up the works.

I suspect the only ones will be ballast trains, probably loaded from large stockpiles at various places that are fed by trucks. Moolort is no longer in use I think - a handy location if it was.
