Wynyard tram station pointwork

The tandem facing and trailling crossovers in the double-track tunnel immediately north of Wynyard station were electro-pneumatic in function, controlled from a small cabin set into the tunnel wall.
That much is well known, but answer me this:
When the above crossovers were not being used (at other than peak hours), trams used a facing crossover at the  south end of the platform to reach the stub tunnel at the south end of the down track (ready to change poles and proceed into Platform 2 for their next load).
The stub tunnel at the south end of Platform 1 was used to store/refuge service vehicles and defective cars.
How was entry to this latter stub or the facing crossover controlled?
This may seem like historical (59 years ago) trivia, but someone must know . . .

AFAIK, the south end facing crossover wasn't originally built, but was a later addition.

Interesting stuff. I guess the facing points were set for the stub, and changed by lever to straight ahead on the few occasions when needed, and the trailing points were spring-loaded, much the same as most single-track terminuses (termini) in Melbourne. The number of trams using the stub, on the first-in last-out principle, could be determined by the drivers, as happens in Melbourne, or station staff.

This letter to the Herald in April 1939 supports that view - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/17583821. The writer claims that the tunnel crossovers were used "only in slack periods." There are some other interesting remarks on the operation of the tram platforms at that time..
