V sets doing City Circle, North Sydney-Harbour Bridge trips

G'day All,

Most of Sydney Terminal is shut for trackwork. Newcastle/Central Coast trains are using the suburban platforms. Today (Saturday) a lot of V sets went empty from Central to North Sydney and back. Some also went empty around the City Inner.

If anyone wants a photo of a V set on the Harbour Bridge, or at Museum Station or Circular Quay etc, tomorrow's your chance! You may need a little patience, particularly for the City Circle ones.

P.S: Please show courtesy to train crew by avoiding the use of your flash in the underground.

yes it was interesting. I was on standby on 16 and was not expecting the distinct hiss of V set brake release so got up to have a look. Yep there was a terminated V, didnt have my camera with me unfortunately.

I'm dying to take a V through the City underground and SHB! Thanks for the info Nad's! The kids will love it too...if we can make it there today that is.  Smile

I saw this yesterday. I took a few photos on my phone that I will download later and post online.

In the meantime this is V30 pulling into platform 16 at Central which I uploaded to twitter yesterday: http://twitpic.com/4fwqvf

Well I got my guess-estimated timing of a V Set being at Milsons Point wrong this afternoon and instead it crossed as I was still walking across the bridge.

This is shot through the fence right in the middle of the bridge:

I have posted 7 other photos from today and yesterday here: http://www.bradheap.id.au/blog/photos/gallery-sydney-trains/

Ever since being in the UK, I have pretty much dropped travelling on trains - they aren't government owned here and it costs $35 to get from the distance equivalent of Central to Hornsby.

They are travelling as usual via Strathfield, arriving Central platform 16 terminating and then empty to North Sydney or Hornsby, then empty on the return to Central 18 before running via Strathfield to Wyong/Newcastle

Just out of curiosity, do the V sets just pull up on Platform 18, pickup then go or do they dwell there for a while? If the later, would they dwell long enough to affect trains which normally pull up on Platform 18?

Come off it  Buy advance and go off peak.
Have just bought tickets for my trip to England in May-June
Paddington to Oxford return $12.50
Euston to Holyhead $52
Holyhead to Manchester $60
Manchester to Euston $27
The Holyhead fares could have been much less if I had not had to connect with Irish ferries.

When they pulled up on Saturday they were there for a good few minutes (approx 5). But I guess the service frequency is less during the weekend than a weekday.

Lack of govt ownership has little to do with it. Just because something is or is not govt owned does not mean it wil or will not get a subsidy and what that subsidy will be.

Plenty of private airlines in Australia operating with govt subsidies and if you have seen Brisbane's train ticket prices lately you'd question if it was owned by a govt.

The dwell times were around 5 mins maximum, so no real problem there (especially seeing it was a weekend).

Even if they had dwelled long enough to affect other trains, they'd probably just have switched the non-intercity onto 19.

i saw a couple of v sets sitting in Hornsby yard over the weekend. And it's funny to see an 8 car V set on platform 18 because the last car never fits in the station.

We had a few in the depot too. Plus an overcarry. She had no idea where she was.

Heads up anyone who wants to ride a V set over the harbour bridge, this weekend is your chance. Sydney Terminal is closed and Blue Mountains trains will instead use the suburban platforms at Central and continue through to North Sydney as passenger services.

There's another weekend closure of platforms 1-15 coming up on 21st-22nd October, but it looks like they'll unfortunately run the V-sets as empty trains between Central and North Sydney. The trackwork poster says:

Due to work on platforms 1-15 at Central Station:

  • Trains which are 4 carriages long start and end at Central, suburban platforms.
  • Trains which are 8 carriages long run between Blue Mountains Line stations and Blacktown only.

It seems to be very inconsistent on when they extend as passenger services to North Sydney, or when they terminate at Central platform 16 and run empty across the bridge.

4 car V sets only as 8 car V sets are too long for the underground platforms and associated signalling. 8 cars V sets will run from the upper mountains to Blacktown where passengers will have to change to a suburban set. Gets rid of the problems associated with using buses. Probably running passenger free from Central to speed things up.

That's funny! I've been on 8 car V sets which ran via the North Shore line and stopped at Town Hall, Wynyard, North Sydney, Chatswood, Gordon and Hornsby, and back to it's normal stopping pattern to Newcastle as an express train "The day's when Newcastle had a railway line" NOW before you get into your doubts here, this was the LAST train from Sydney to Newcastle
the same 8 car V set returned to Sydney via Strathfield the Northern line

Sydney terminal - platforms 4 to 15 most tracks were lifted and rewelded or the rails replaced all points seemed to be good at the time so I didn't get to see any points being replaced

IF I did have a camera I would have taken a lot of photos as it was awesome to see Smile
I also seen the entire Newcastle line being resleepered with concrete sleepers, I watched it all night! Took the trackworkers 5 hours from what I can remember maybe 6 hours...
