** 1AD8 departed as noted above but pulled to a stop at the signals at the north end of Mile End loop (where the GSR terminal track joins the mainline) and waited some 15 minutes - last two carriages blocking the maintenance access level crossing. (to the annoyance of some workers)
By 12:45 the locos had reached the River Torrens Rail Bridge and again waited for clearance through the Torrens Junction Work site.  At 12:54 it proceeded at walking pace (with warning bell on) through the work site only accelerating when the locos approached the Torrens Road Level crossing.

Do the same locos that work The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin, then work the return service?
So, would NR109 and NR75 have arrived in Adelaide with The Ghan on Saturday, 30 September?

Spletsie
Yes they do, the locos are marshalled cab leading/cab following so there is no need to turn them in Darwin.
As soon as they are released from 4DA8 on Saturday, then run out to Dry Creek for servicing, then return Sunday morning for 1AD8
(as a side note NR109 has lead 1AD8 for the last 3 weeks and was 2nd loco the week before that)

Thanks Pressman. That's useful information.

With a consist of 36 cars, what are the splitting/marshalling arrangements at each end of the run? And how long does it take to walk the length of such a train?

edison
G'day Edison,

At Keswick Terminal
The 2 locos and the northern 11 carriages (297m long)  are docked in Platform 2. The southern portion has 25 carriages (575m) is docked in platform 1.

The locos and first 11 carriages depart at around 11:45 am then set back onto the remainder.
The final departure is 12:15pm
Total train length (including locos) is approx. 872 metres

It is not possible for a passenger to walk the full length of the train (inside that is) because the power cars are a no-go zone for passengers. Power cars are located at car 1, car 20 and car 36.

The consist is not split in Alice Springs or Darwin.
