PN to lose Allied Mills grain contract

Sunshine was is basically a grain storage for distribution by road around Melb. Primarily it was barley that came in by rail. There was also some storage of grain for export until it was required at Geelong. Grain hoppers were primarily delivered and picked up by Tottenham pilots. Loaded grain trains for Geelong however did depart directly from Sunshine as did empty trains in later years probably as a result of Tottenham being run down. During my time watching sunshine movements only about 5 percent was grain out to Geelong, the vast bulk was barley and some wheat in bound for local consumption in and around Melb.

The C class have returned to NSW, another pair of RL's maybe Vic bound so time in the future.

SSR may have also gained Allied in NSW ( Maldon ) a loaded SSR train is said to be doing a load there later this week.

There is an SSR grain train unloading at the Allied Mill at Maldon this afternoon.

Couldn't see the locos as they were up in the cutting beyond the unloading point.

If I get the chance I will have another look later but I do not like my chances.

First train arrived in Deniliquin this morning to load tomorrow. T386/T381/S317 - S should lead on the return move on Tuesday.

Probably won't unload at Kensington until Wednesday. Flemington line/Melb Cup on Tuesday and all that stuff...

But great to see SSR making a decent go at Broad gauge grain.

Good Question Clyde. Assuming that you realise that Sunshine and Kensington are different facilities operated by different companies I pose the following addendum questions for those in the know.

What is the capacity at Kensington?
How many wagons is this new SSR train? (test train was only 6 or 7 wagons)
Does the train run via Albion and then shunt back to Kensington or does it run via Craigieburn etc (my Northern Suburbs knowledge is apalling)
How often did PN trains operate to this facility (I know it would be on an as required basis, more wondering if PN only ran when convenient for them)

What is the capacity at Sunshine?
Is this a BG or DG facility?
Is it accessed direct from the Down RRL line or can it be accessed from the Newport end?

Sunshine was mentioned as possibly seeing new traffic at the top of this thread, are there any more rumours regards this?

Some new pics over at VicSig show a decent sized train, looks like 30+ wagons with the two Ts and S317. Great to see.

There are now 2 excellent Youtube clips on SSR's first movement of grain on BG.   The consist was 20 wagons comprising a tranche of ex Leigh Creek Coal hoppers now painted black  and fitted with "lids" and riding on newly overhauled yellow BG bogies.   Similarly a fleet of ex PN refurbished and painted ex VR grain hoppers also painted black on refurbished yellow bogies and to top it of an Ex NSWGR "black" hopper acquired by El Zorro and now painted black on yellow bogies.   A very neat consist grossing out at about 1500 tonnes.

Sunshine is BG only. There is a switch locked connection at the Brooklyn end. I have seen it used in staff locked days but very rare. Even when Geelong loaded grains ran the engine would haul the load into the down end sidings, run around , and then depart via Brooklyn. When I inquired about this I was told the signalling staff did not have time to take a staff down to the Brooklyn end and weren't prepared to give it to the arriving light engine as it could be an hour before the train was ready to depart. This entrance is now switch locked so should be much easier to use, but I have not seen a loaded grain train leave here in years and have not lived there for the past 8 years.
