They were silly enough to let the public name a new Sydney Ferry. Apparently Boaty McBoatface won this one too, but they decided that two with the same name wasn't good, so gave it to the runner up.

The ship whose name was selected as "Boaty McBoatface" was actually named "Sir David Attenborough"

It shows a sense of humour...

At least 'they' have actually honoured the wishes of the internet and named the ferry Ferry McFerryface. The poor ROV on the David Attenborough was all that earned the true 'Boaty' moniker.

They've named others after people like Fred Hollows, Victor Chang et al, and if I was family I wouldn't want Ferry McFerryface to be part of the same fleet. Are they trying to honour deserving people, or they more interested in behaving like school kids?

So what do ordinary people think of the six new Incat built ferries and what is the management opinion of them?

I keep an eye on the fast ferry industry and Incat have traditionally built large sea going ferries over 100 metres long that carried 1,000 passengers and 400 cars at 100 kmh. They are absolute world leaders in that category.

In recent years they've diversified into much smaller, slower river and bay ferries as well. Because that is a fairly new product category for Incat, there isn't much of a view of what their smaller and slower ferries are like and how they measure up against the competition.

So I'd be grateful to hear peoples gratuitous personal views (as well as considered rational thoughts). Thanks. Smile

So giving the bird to authority in Australia is out of order now, how dull and boring we've become. The larrikin is dead.

Manly McManlyface would be a better name IMO.

But I like ferries.  Much cheaper than building a $14 billion Northern Beaches toll road and tunnel that would cost $1 million per meter to build!

Subsidies could be reduced or a dividend paid if they were simply able to pay for the naming rights rather than infiltrating online polls.

Seems that the Minister has finally awoken from his stupor.

Now it is to be named May Gibbs after a popular author of children's books.

It seems that some of the most popular (and apparently eminently sensible) station names voted on by Victorians for the new underground line were simply over ruled at the end of the day but the most stupid of them North Melbourne turning into West Melbourne and North Melbourne being built elsewhere remained.
  justapassenger Chief Commissioner

A far better way to handle the Ferry McFerryface issue would have been to laugh it off at the time of the names being revealed.

Then announce that the Ferry McFerryface name would be used on an exclusively licensed run of models of the new ferry type and a limited run of children's toys, with the proceeds from sales of both going to something like MND research. Who couldn't be happy with that?

Who do I collect my consultancy fee from?

I actually put that as a serious suggestion. And was surprised they went their way actually renaming the station based on locations not on popular suggestions by the public.

And it isn't stupid to rename station to reflect better to its geographical location. Yes confusing at first, but never the less if planned correctly people will get used to it.

Many railway stations have been changed in the past with names that don't even match the location, cough Melbourne Central comes second place and Southern Cross wins the most confusing. Yeah just call the station after a constellation in the sky. At least all these names for the Metro Tunnel make a lot of sense and good for the panel to base on location instead of the Premier picking names for each one.

Perhaps we will have to agree to disagree on this one! Smile

To me, the North Melbourne - West Melbourne thing is a traditional government project of making two moves when one would have done. It is activity as a substitute for actual achievement.

Similarly, in my day, Southern Cross was/is a station in Western Australia 405 km east of Perth where the SG line diverged NE from the NG Eastern Goldfields Railway alignment towards Koolyanobbing and thence to Kalgoorlie. This route was followed under standardisation specifically for the Koolyanobbing ore traffic.

While we are talking useless projects and Southern Cross; when the Koolyanobbing ore traffic ceases perhaps we should revert to the old, more direct, NG route  between Kalgoorlie and Southern Cross via Coolgardie and save 45 km of line haul in the process. (ha bloody ha). Smile

The renaming of Spencer Street to Southern Cross was a classic example of a lot of money spent to achieve precisely nothing.

Spencer street is now known as Southern Cross, WHY?
Even as a NSWelshman who has only visited Melbourne once knows that Spencer Street was Melbourne's equivalent of Sydney's Central Station and Brisbane's Roma Street.
I would be looking for for the Southern Cross ala pattern on the Flag.

I beg to differ Valvegear, the renaming of Spencer St achieved quite a lot - confusing the hell out of a whole bunch of folks both local and visitors AND as an added bonus costing a fortune in design, printing and other associated costs.

Just another vanity project by a Premier drunk on power and who cares about the cost, he got to leave his mark on something.

Whilst the renaming of Spencer Street was a complete waste of money, at least they didn't compound the confusion by naming another station Spencer Street as is happening with the West/North Melbourne thing. Arden is very relevant to the area surrounding the station which is to be named North Melbourne and shouldn't be confused with the old North Melbourne station at the corner of Dryburgh and Adderley Streets, which has been renamed West Melbourne. The Arden area is slated for redevelopment.
