I have just received a letter in the mail box from PN (Pacific National) railway company stating :-

This letter is to inform you of increased railway activities at the Gheringhap  railway siding’

PN will be delivering a new service, which will require locomotive refueling to  occur at the Gheringhap siding.

Increased rail and mobile fueling truck movements will occur at this location to ensure this service to be delivered, and therefore reducing road transport requirements.

Interesting. My response is, bring it on, look forward to more action at Gheringhap.

Interesting times GoG. I do wonder what the new service will be and who the customer is.  This is probably happening because of the lack of SG into North Geelong Yard?

given the route change for the fruity once is goes SG, will that impact the endurance of the locos that run that service? as in will they need a refuel on the way back from up north?

Most should be capable of making Merbein-Appleton Dock, the only locos that I think that would struggle would be the 81s as they have the smallest tanks at 8000L.

How much longer is the route via Ararat compared to via Ballarat?

EDIT: Roughly 136 km (based on VicSig distances).

Maryborough - North Geelong via Ararat & Maroona        289 km
Maryborough - North Geelong via Ballarat                          153 km

What is not clear is which gauge or both?

I doubt this is based on the Mildura service as this would be able to handle the extra distance and refueling is/was available at Mildura. (There is a fuel point)

PN often use the Geelong loco for re-fuel, provisioning, etc. this is AFAIK run by Bombardier; maybe PN are simply trying to save money. Works for BG, anyway.

I am thinking it will be at the S/G siding  Brian. Last week there was about eight rail workers working near the refuge sidings and they were paying a lot of attention to the four wooden light poles on my side of the tracks, none of them have been used since the gypsum siding move about 1996. I thought they might be pulling the poles out but now I am thinking they will be using them when they start the re-fuelling.
