With the steam season here in NSW about to kick off this weekend with the annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam, here are a few scenes from the event 20 years ago. Locomotives in steam on that occasion in 1998 were 2705, 3830 & 5910.
Enjoy,

BW thanks for posting. Was on that train also, in the first car absolutely convinced someone applied a non adhesive liquid to the rails in the cutting on the loop line. 3830 stamped away and pushed pushed the l27 up the hill.

Got off a train in western Sydney hauled by 3801 returning from the mountains, spoke to driver, you have not spun the wheels today. Well unsure if he was offended over enthusiastic or the thing primed, holy Smeg leaving in a taxi after negotiating stairs and everything else, a MASSIVE cloud of smoke remained.

When 2705 ran down to Picton LE it knocked over all the long grass onto the rail head. Combine that with a light shower and you have all the ingredients to create a massive wheel slip.

When was 5910 Retired from tour duties? It mustn't have had much longer to go in steam before it was relegated to being a static exhibit.

I am given to understand that 5910 was not "retired". There was no choice in the matter.

I was under the same impression, I have heard that 5910 was sidelined because of damage caused that wasn't due to wear and tear, but I have never seen an official statement from the Rail Transport Museum (or whatever they're called this week) regarding what happened to it, nor what would be required to being the locomotive back into service.

I always thought 1997 was when 5910 was sidelined, however this video proves that theory wrong. I was more curious as to when it's last run in steam was.
