Suprised it isn't being sent to SSR Bendigo for this work, they afterall pioneered the repair method used on the SSR/CFCLA fleet.

Six and a half inches from destiny is probably one contributing factor ...

B61, B65, B76, B80, S300, S317, S301, S306, S307, and even S302 (after an earlier attempt by EDI) have been all repaired by the Bendigo team.

The Bendigo shop guys certainly know their stuff with this type of repair.

B75 will no doubt as part of its resto get the same treatment in due course.

Six and a half inches of destiny makes a big difference!

It is interesting that the B and S class suffered the cracks yet the GM's don't. Maybe something to do with the fact that the GM's still use springs and shock absorbers between the bodie fame/bogie bolster while the Victorian units have rubber pads. All off the 422's that came to SA had to have bolster repairs done. In the end they cut out the affected section of frame and welded a whole new section in.

i think you will find that's exactly why the victorian stuff cracked , ive found gm's tend to ride better with the bolster springs

Just out of interest, has B74, S302, S303, S310, S311 and S313 had this repair?

A GM was seen Northbound on the Hume Highway around Kalkallo Wednesday morning.  Photo snapped looks like GM12 but hard to make out. No bogies as it was on a truck.

David Head

Can't vouch for S310 but all all the other locomotives have.

S313 did not have replaceent of whole sections of frame as the degree of cracking was nowhere near as bad as all the other Locos.  The cracks were simply ground out and welded and NDT tested to ensure all cracks were eliminated.

The listed Locos and Hoppers are all in Enfield this evening by all accounts. All bar 48s36* & S312 arrived this afternoon from points North. Said to be departing under the cover of darkness.

So S312 is headed back to Victoria. No doubt it will be taken to Bendigo, via a bogie exchange at Seymour to place it back on the Broad Gauge.

So this begs the question, when back in Victoria what fate awaits S312? Is it to be placed in storage as a ready source of spare parts for other S & B class locos? Or is there a chance of re-activation?

Would there be enough work for it on the BG for any operator?  With SG opening up more and more could be better left on SG?

Not sure why QUBE was dragged into the discussion. S312 is owned by SSR as previously stated and as general rule SSR don't lease out locos to QUBE (not to say it couldn't happen).

The intention is to reactivate S312 for BG - how long that takes is another matter and will likely be influenced by new business opportunities if and when they arise.
