Interesting in that passengers did not want to pay for the service.  Is Victrack still planing to add wifi to the regional train fleet as they have been promising for years?  If they do I wonder now if it would be free and I am hoping it would be.

There are better things to look at when on a train in Switzerland than a Mobile Phone screen.

As they said, someone has to pay, and the passengers don't wish to, nor does the Railway want to pay and jacking up ticket prices would not go down well either.

User Pays - as it should be - via the SIM Card in their phone.

WiFi on trains is only a good idea for long distance routes that go through genuinely remote areas.

For everywhere else, better to instead spend the money on subsidising the installation of additional towers for better 4G coverage along the route - especially in the case of a national railway like the SBB.

Far better to watch the scenery even if it happens to be a naked woman on the platform 'somewhere' in the Czech Republic.
I missed the actual station name however - not that I could have spelt it anyway!!!!SmileSmile

For you and me, yes. But for somebody who commutes, riding the same train(s) every day, perhaps looking out the window isn't high on their priority list. I have ridden many trains in Europe and in Canada which have free wifi, and can understand the attraction, and can understand why people have an expectation that it will be free. If Switzerland is like lots of other European countries, free wifi is available everywhere. Why not on a train?  (That's from a passenger's perspective, not necessarily mine)

With all those mountains and tunnels, probably technically more expensive. Free Wi-Fi isn't free; someone else bears the cost.

I would be very surprised if the Swiss dont already have a high quality communication system already in place throughout their Rail Network for very obvious reasons so adding WiFi to it shouldnt be that difficult but maybe no body wanted to pay for its installation and operation.

This article seems very old / wrong - it does not agree with the experience currently on the ground in Switzerland. When I arrived in Switzerland in 2013 virtually every train (other than suburbans) had free Wifi which I used. It worked. Everywhere. Then sometime after, perhaps in 2015 the capability was removed and replaced with 4G repeaters, maybe using the same infrastructure. It was Swiss news at that time.

Cheers
