V/Line Incidents/Disruptions

Not a week goes by without a signal failure at Sunbury.  Both Monday and Wednesday this week were a shambles....  Incidentally, there's been some classic euphemisms churned out by V/line social media lately.

Ha ha, that is a classic, right up there with last months "conjestion at Castlemaine"

Do you think that the V/line Twittererer (or as I like to call them, Twits) is just seeing how random they can get before someone in management realizes and tells them to pull their head in?

You would have to do a whole years training to come up with some of this stuff I reckon.

Nah.  Probably more like (at a minimum) a 3 year degree in Media & Communications + a year of training by the Dept.

Issues at Sunbury will be ongoing as the defects have not been addressed by V/Line/Metro.  Essentially the issue is a design defect in programming with the interlocking and TPWS at the location. The issue is the timing is not correct between the track object controllers and the interlocking system.  The issue has been there since the contractor installed the changes but refuses to fix the issue at the moment.  The contract between the PTV (whomever) and the contractor does not provide for the timely fixes for such issues.

Summary, this is a known issue that is not a priority for fixing.

Train fault, staff sickness, and unruly passengers - now I've heard it all. It's up there with, "The dog ate my homework."

You stay classy, Footscary.  Seriously though, trains cancelled due to "unruly passengers"?

Well it IS Friday after all! Does the fortnightly roster cycle end tomorrow night by any chance?

Oh dear, that is dissapointing, can't wait for next Friday!

On a lighter note my Up 16.25 ex Castlemaine was setting a cracking pace this evening before a trespasser caused us to slow to a crawl from Calder Park right through to somewhere near St Albans, finally arriving around 15 minutes late.

I don't want to make light of what it a serious scenario but there are quite a few of these trespasser situations, is it simply a case of someone running across the tracks as a shortcut being reported to police or something more serious?

I have seen a bloke on more than one occasion get off a Metro service at West Footscray and then take a shortcut right across Totty yard to get to the road.

I suspect that at least a number of these cases are about people crossing the tracks as has been suggested.

In this nanny state one only has to listen to some of the radio programs where people ring up to say:

  • There are two police cars outside xxxxxxxxx
  • Two fire engines just went along xxxxxxxxx
  • It is raining at xxxxxx

I am not suggesting risk taking but many people these days seem to be 'alarmed not alert' rather than 'alert not alarmed'. A few dodgy phone calls or a few items of lost property could, and has, brought the entire network to its knees.

Have a look at the V/Line website now.

Rather unusual for a Sunday to have trains cancelled on each line due to lack of staff.
One exception is the Shepparton which has been run to Seymour and buses beyond due to yet another "heritage set" failure.

Also, no Albury has managed to run at all yet today due to maintenance issues.
  potatoinmymouth Chief Commissioner

This has to be a joke.

Two Albury trains had to replaced on Sunday due to a signal fault on the ARTC network, which then caused a fault to a V/Line train approaching the area.

What, did the signal become sentient and attack the train “Day of the Triffids”-style?

Here's a message I have't heard in a while:
"The 17:40 Warrnambool to Southern Cross train has been delayed 15 minutes due to multiple speed restrictions between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool."
Don't tell this is happening all over again.

Perhaps it lost its path coming in to Geelong?  Seems ok today.

Several bustitutions due to "Staff Sickness" again this morning....

Wow!  A new reason for not running a train.  Has this got something to do with ICE radios not working in some areas due to the Telstra phone outage?

OK, word now coming through on ABC Radio news of a major Telstra outage affecting 4G and cascading over into their 3G network right around Australia.

My mobile was out of action by the time my train got into Castlemaine just before 11 and took 30 minutes or so to come back on.

Both my EFT machine and alarm here at work rely on the 3G network so maybe some of VLine's crucial functions do too.

BTW Telstra telling people who need 000 that they should use a landline (although they also say that other carrier's networks should kick in for emergency calls in this situation. My phone showed emergency calls only so I assume that it did just that)

PTV, Metro and Vline Announcement

To avoid customer (they mean passenger) inconvenience and to ensure that you reach your destination on time (haha) please note that trains will run at alternate times during the current shambles caused by the Liberal Party. The new timetable will commence with the first train tomorrow and will apply to all lines except for express trains which are not running are scheduled. In this case the next scheduled express will be regarded as the alternative service.

All other trains will be cancelled except where listed unless other notice is given to the contrary except for those trains unlisted since the last amendments prior to the issue of the latest timetable which has now been amended to cater for the current emergency except for those amendments which have been advised as not applicable for today only.

Remember that passenger and staff safety is our number one priority and we are, after all, building a tunnel which will not affect your line but which will allow you to get to/from Geelong in 20 minutes in about 100 years.

I am trying to piece this together from various V/Line announcements / Tweets etc.

It sounds like the radios failed due the the Telstra network failure.

But V/Line have also reported in response to bewildered customers on Twitter that a driver's Sat phone also failed.

So is it then the case that the train radios use Telstra 3G (or 4G but more likely 3) networks but have a Satellite back up. When the Telstra network went down most of the phones switched to the Sat network but this one failed, the driver could not communicate with Control and perform the radio check and therefore the service was cancelled?

Because most other services on the network ran through this Telstra outage.
