Southern Rail Spectacular Featuring Beyer-Garratt steam locomotive 6029 Southern Rail Spectacular – a new and possibly first-ever 5-day adventure – offering the opportunity to ride behind one of Australia’s most famous locomotives, the legendary Beyer-Garratt 6029. This 265-ton monster, the largest locomotive ever to operate in Australia, is just part of this heritage rail tour from Sydney to Victoria and back.
Cruise Express

Looks like an interesting trip being planned - hopefully they get the passenger numbers to make it viable.

Had me worried for a moment. Thought 6029 was going to be flogged all the way to Melbourne and then back to Sydney. Sounds like a good trip. Pity we have already booked and paid for overseas destinations this year.

There is suggestion in the link that SRHC are converting some of their SOP Cars to SG.

Like last year, "Seymour, all change".

A station stop and change across from SG to BG trains.

Keeping the tradition alive.

If only there was standard gauge Vic steam loco...

Will passengers be dealing with their luggage, or station staff (ha!)?

Cruise Express did the baggage handling last year.

So from a Victorian perspective:

SRHC are converting their SOP cars to SG then hauling a train from Albury to Melbourne, and then bak to Albury behind diesel P22

Whilst in Melbourne, Steamrail will operate a train to Castlemaine and return with A2 986

Also 707 operations will run a single run, taking the passengers from Southern Cross to Newport Workshops and return with R707

Seems like a fair trip, with a couple of good little side trips.

NSWRM On-Board Crew stowed guests Luggage in PHN’s Luggage Compartment at Sydney Terminal.
They also transferred the luggage at Seymour across the platform to be loaded onto the Spirit of Progress when it drew into the platform. This is all part of the service.

Use of large restored steamers such as that AD60 on luxury modern multi day rail cruises is not new as Bill Peach Rail Cruise or similar name used 3801 or similar on short bits some years ago. This was in the internet era as I read about it on one of the internet forums.

So 6029 runs Goulburn to Junee on the Thursday then returns with the train to Goulburn on the Monday.

Are there shuttles being run behind 6029 over the weekend? Apparently last year's behind 3642 were cancelled due to essential maintenance needed before the 2018 running season.

I would be keen to see 6029 in action if it were running shuttles from Junee over the weekend. Can't find any indication as yet that will be happening.

Anyone have any clue whether this will happen...?

Any word as yet of running times for 6029 between Goulburn and Junee? The Cruise Express website states that the trip is booked out, but gives no running times - apart from stating that the train will depart Sydney on Thursday, 30 August, and will be away for five days. I've looked on the ARTC website, but there's no sign of a TAA (oh for the days of STN's).

Can anybody shed some light on this matter?

Shouldn't be too long now, probably just sorting out final timings, and train paths with ARTC, maybe up next week sometime

Do you have a source for this? There's no mention of an announcement on the THNSW website.

ARTC TAA No. 0853-2018 gives the times for Thursday and Friday.

Word is that this Saturday morning's run to Castlemaine will see A2'986 double-heading with K153 which will then remain on the VGR for a while.  A2'986 will return that afternoon to SCS as the sole motive power.

According to the SRHC blog, they have been quite busy at Seymour. P22 and T357 have both been placed on the SG, courtesy of borrowed bogies from T333 and T342. Also P22 has been freshly painted in VR Blue and Gold and the carriage set has been converted as well.

All seems ready to go for Friday.

Quite a lot of work has been done to pull this off, the crew at the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre deserve a good amount of credit for pulling it off.

The ARTC TAA doesn't show any train for the passengers in Victoria to return to Goulburn.
They can't use the XPT since the Garratt leaves Goulburn an hour ahead of the XPT.

The cruise website still shows the proposed arrangements.

The Garratt will now run Goulburn to Picton instead of Junee to Goulburn.

It sounds like they'll use a bus....

Good to see they're using all the forms of "rail" transport available now!

Bus from Albury to either Canberra or Goulburn. I've heard both locations, either way its 1250 departure from Canberra on Monday.
  Southern Aurora Locomotive Driver

Is there a schedule available for the Friday morning run south from Albury please?

Also how many cars have been/are being converted to SG for this run??
