3 demo for Australia
If these were "built for Australia" in 2016, why aren't they in Australia?
No customers. Expect them to be here by years end, is what I was informed by a manager from Muncie.

Seriously? They are "demonstrators" for Australia. Bring them to Australia and demonstrate them!

'Seriously? They are "demonstrators" for Australia. Bring them to Australia and demonstrate them!'

What a simple straightforward concept. I wonder why the Phds and MBAs never thought of that?

My understanding is it isn't as straightforward as that.

From my understanding due to EDi Downer selling their 'Heavy' side of their business to Progress Rail, Progress Rail couldn't "Demonstrate" their wears in Australia while negotiations were being had between themselves and EDi Downer, even though EDi Downer were meant to be being supplied by Progress Rail, Muncie. So, Progress Rail could only "Demonstrate" in the U.S. by having prospective customers come to them, but with the market, rather quite in Australia, no one was really interested in going to the U.S. when they could wait and use surplus traction here ala VLs, ELs & whatever else is sitting around.

If every operator in the country already knows what a GT46 does, nobody really needs to see a demo. Perhaps you build demos while you try to get your Tier 4 into production, or maybe there is a new style hotplate available.

EMD really should have built the proposed narrow gauge 138/150-tonne GT46CU-ACe as demonstrators instead - proving this design on the Aurizon coal network (theoretically capable of supporting a 159-tonne six axle locomotive) would have made a much bigger impact than building updated versions of the proven standard gauge design. There remains an ongoing need for the next generation narrow gauge AC traction Australian diesel, which to date has not been exploited by EMD. Both Aurizon and PN will need new power sooner rather than later - and PN's dalliances with the SDA-2 88 class and the UGL/GE PowerHauls has shown current available designs have long and difficult transitions from construction to active service. Between them, Aurizon, PN and BMA have 358 locomotives allocated to the Aurizon coal network.

Apparently these are fitted with the P6 electrical system like in the new T4 EMD's over in the states, smaller inverters and a much higher tractive effort from the same horsepower so these new ones should outpull the GT46's we know and see. T3 compliant engine too so probably fitted with those scrubber screens in the exhaust manifolds and a slightly different fuel management system so perhaps slightly lower consumption. Basically they are to be 'the same but better' to what we already have.

I imagine SCT might be interested if they keep expanding like they have been to have a semi standard fleet on the books and for maintenance

I was informed by a Progress Rail employee that these demo units are to arrive on the 2nd of August at the port of Newcastle. Apparently there will be 6 locos instead of three and that two will be sent to SA whilst one will be based at Progress Rail Cardiff. I have no idea where the other three are going.

When they were announced, there were two types: one type built for the Hunter Valley weighing 180 tonnes and the other for general service weighing 134 tonnes. If three are the heavy units they will go into coal traffic.

The GT46C-ACe out of the US won't be dispatched until after an order for Chile is dispatched, so not until after August.

I believe that 1400 block (GR12/NF210/G22C) will be first to go, on a 2 for one basis

7 GE's are on order for 2019 delivery, so by end of 2019 28 should have been withdrawn

Antofagasta scuttlebutt is that the 8 1502 cores stored at Patio Norte will also be gasaxed

It is expected that more new locos will be ordered early 2019 for 2020 delivery

Anyone wanting to photograph action like this had better start planing a trip now

TOC waiver was issued today for "Movement of EMD GT46C-ACe Gen II Locomotive Class on the ARTC Network". Three locos numbered EMD101, EMD102 & EMD103 to be moved dead attached between Carrington and Woodville Junction by SSR.

Any word on when these units arrive? Any idea if these follow the usual cab/carbody outline started with the EMD 90 class or a more conventional USA shape?

Google GT46 blah, blah and have a look at the brochure. Very similar to the Gen I, even down to the knee-cap destroying driving station.

The main difference between the existing locomotives and the new units is that they have six inverters, one per traction motor while the older units have two inverters, one per bogie. However, since the new inverters are much more compact, they take up only half the space. This allows a small platform at the rear, not on the older units. This isn't obvious from the brochure.

I am curious to know what livery they’ll come in? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the Yellow Progress Rail colours that LDP005 has.

I'm told they are coming in undercoat and will be painted at Cardiff.

If the story that they will be leased to SSR is true, they might be painted yellow and black.

But the Progress Rail and SSR colours aren't very different.

They might just change the lettering....

Peter

SSR will be doing transfers from the dock to Cardiff but will not be leasing or purchasing locos. They will be painted at Cardiff and it sounds like an owner has been found before they even land and it’s not SSR
