News article: West is best for airport rail, says airport operator

A high speed train line from the CBD through Melbourne's western suburbs is the best way to deliver a "fast, frequent and affordable" airport rail link, the airport's operator says.

This company has changed it's stance on the project as they were not for the rail link several years ago. We have the federal government wanting to fast track the link and we have the airport authority now wanting the link.  The only person who does not want the link seems to be Daniel Andrews.

As has been pointed out numerous times before on RP it is NOT only Dapper Dan who doesn't think that we need the Airport rail link - Infrastructure Victoria doesn't think that we need it either

Obviously now with $5Bn of federal cash on the table we will probably get it anyway, a typical example of why governments of all colours and creeds cannot be trusted with taxpayer's dosh.

With impetus growing for the long-awaited rail link, the Australian Pacific Airports Corporation has for the first time gone public with its preferred route, saying a line from Southern Cross to the airport with a major interchange at Sunshine is the “clear front-running route” for the project.'

At least the Feds are wanting to stump up most of the $$ for the airport line. Moreover, with the above endorsement the Airport link will further enhance the three major V/Line commuter lines currently converging on Sunshine which to me is more important than the airport connection itself.

It also puts to bed for good PM Turnbull's plan to tunnel through Maribyrnong via the former Department of Supply land.

I wouldn't dignify it with the word "plan". There was no planning.  It's better described as a hare brained idea dreamed up after a few glasses of (insert choice of booze here).

Cos they've realised there's $$$ in it for them. Until APAC/MAC put up significant cash towards the project they shouldn't be given a say. Rather, they ought to be told how, when and where they will host a railway
