Good meme, Mods Plz Move this to the Armchair Operations Zone.

What Island's in Indonesia will it go to? Java? Bali? Timur? Also, You Need to remember that the only islands that have railways are Java and Sumatra and they are of the 3,6 Gauge. Have fun!

Food for thought.

What are the distances?  You would think to the island with Jakarta would be the better option but that would be a HUGE distance.

Why stop at Jakarta. Continue to Singapore Hong Kong and Shanghai. Possible extension to Bejing and finally Moscow.

Elon Musk might be interested.Laughing

Wouldnt such a route be better of going direct through the mantle?  Theres quite a few thousand KM you'd knock off the route by going direct to say London.  Just mind the dip at the start and the end.

There isn't even enough demand for a ferry between Darwin and East Timor yet.

Unfortunately.

If as posted,a Tunnel between Darwin and any part of Indonesia would carry purely a One Way Traffic stream and I dont think it would imagination to say what those Travelers are.

After seeing how many try everyday to use the 'Cross Channel Tunnel' between France and the UK, you can forget THAT idea straight away !!!

Just when we thought longer tunnels went possible.

The slight issue of the Timor Sea reaching depths of up to 3.2km and the Indian Ocean 5.3km between Darwin and Java would, I believe, make any tunnel construction, with any current method, impossible.

A pipe dream of "socialist progress".
Sounds like a solution looking for a problem.

I see the ghost of Spike Milligan behind this. It's on a par with The First Albert Memorial to the Moon, The Great International Christmas Pudding, and The Missing Number 10 Downing Street.

And if you island hop (Cape York to Jakarta) to minimise undersea tunnelling it is only 5390km!

Alternatively if it started in Wictoria it could be on a bridge all the way except the section down Port Phillip Bay where it would be in a trench so as not to impair the vistas for those around Portsea..Rolling Eyes

Take it all the way through to India, so Dorky Dan 707 could make a pilgrimage to the broadest of all broad gauges.

Now that this project is to go ahead it will be necessary to mine and crush Ayers Rock to provide the necessary aggregate for the concrete tunnel.
Oops Ayers Rock is sandstone so no good for concrete.  Laughing

YM-Mundrabilla
YM, have dealt with enough shoddy builders, Ayers Rock will be fit for purpose  used as aggregate. Someone will be paid enough to ensure that is signed off.
Whilst in the NT, a branch line should be constructed to the Pilbara, allowing iron ore to be rail freighted into Asia. Yia this ever expanding undersea tunnel network.
Shipping lines take notice.Very Happy
