3801 - Lithgow tour - August 1998

  Bevan Wall Deputy Commissioner

On this day in August twenty years ago, many of us were enjoying the relatively rare sight of 3801 hauling an end platform set over the Blue Mountains. Here's some video to jog the memories.

With regard to the "End Platform Cars" I note that disappointingly there is no "End Platform" at the end adjacent to the locomotive and the rear of the rear car. IMHO these are the best places to have an "End Platform"!

Thanks BW once again.

It was illegal to ride on the end platforms out on the mainline.
The end carriages contained guard compartments.
These end platform carriages were once in suburban use such as on tracks that weren’t electrified such as Richmond and Newcastle.

It was so nice to ride the end platform right next to the smokebox on the Marlborough Flyer wine train out of Picton in New Zealand this year. Just like the old days here. Somehow no-one fell off and we all survived...

ps As always, thanks for the video, Bevan. Was making heavy weather of the climb past Bullaburra.
