Getting rid of the news forum is a good solution.

I like the “discuss this article” feature, but it’s overused and moving the threads to the appropriate fora is only done haphazardly (and fair enough, too, we can’t expect the admins to spend every waking hour categorising other people’s posts).

I don’t know how achievable it would be, but one solution might be to add a drop-down box at some point in the “discuss this article” flow to specify which forum the thread should be created in.

The news comes in via automated software so it is not possible to change the title or check it for every news item.  It would take 1/2 day per day.

Then make it by choice for those news junkies who can't live without it, like some sort of RSS feed. Anything ordinary Railpagers notice in the big wide world of news that they think would be of interest to others here can be posted in the usual way with a link. The "In the News" forum of Whirlpool is certainly not automatic, and threads there get deleted if you don't give an opinion, showing you at least read it before you posted it.

Or add some sort of source or geographical location to the title [in square brackets?]. That should be possible automatically, from the source.

The thread ' Flight shows tank cars gone from Tahawus rail line ' is another instance.

For anyone else as iggerant as me; courtesy of Wikipedia:

Tahawus (also called Adirondac, or McIntyre, pronounced 'tuh-hawz') was a village in the Town of Newcomb, Essex County, New York, United States. It is now a ghost town situated in the Adirondack Park. Tahawus is located in Essex County within the unpopulated northern area designated to the town of Newcomb.[1] Tahawus was the site of major mining and iron smelting operations in the 19th century. Although standing as recently as 2005, the last mining facilities have since been demolished and removed (with the exception of some minor garages, blast furnaces and outbuildings).

Write it up as a RRA-style anonymous press release. If it gets published by Railpage I'll donate $20 to the charity of your choice.
