Smugmug aquires Flickr

  GS4 Junior Train Controller

I just logged into Flickr and multiple pages have a message at the bottom notifying the "great" news that they have joined with Smugmug.

The not so great news is that Smugmug cheapest plan is $3.99 a month. I can see how it seemed too go to be true that Flickr hosted all our photos for free, simple economics obviously.

For those of us that are adding photos we will just have to pay. What is a bit sad is there is some good rail photographers on Flickr who have not added for a while and they may just choose to let their pages close.

Now what...........

I suppose that emails will issue in due course telling us that we have to pay from a given date. Or maybe the blunt way like Photobucket went.

All part of the carve up of Yahoo - partner got new T&C in Yahoo email the other day, taken over by so and so.

Can only wait and see what happens, but I do have a bad feeling about this.

Have 4,300 images on Flickr.

Looking at other people's Smugmug pages, I'm not impressed.

Just received an email advising me that no effect (supposedly) for Flickr until 28 May. After that...who knows.

The FAQ does say the existing Free Accounts will remain, but I wont be surprised if linking is stopped unless a ransom is paid.

SmugMug Hi All, SmugMug and Flickr will continue to operate as separate brands, with no immediate changes to either service. We’ll work together to identify how we’ll continue to build products that thrill our customers.

Well hopefully nothing will change.

I'm not sure how many people read the photography threads , and Flickrs notification was easy to miss. I have not logged into my Yahoo mail for ages so I did not see that notification.

Could moderators issue some kind of an alert for members (and their non-member friends) to ensure they have backed up their Flickr accounts. I really appreciate that so many railfans are willing to display their photo collections. With Australia being so big we cannot easily just pop across to the next major photography spot for a day of train watching , Flickr and similar is the answer.

My Flickr page does not want to link to here for some reason , please forgive the near identical copies in the Qld coal fields. I must get around to removing the copies.

This thread is about the best notification that RP can provide for Flickr users.

And RP has had issues for several months linking to Flickr - one of the many on the to-do list when they get around to fixing things.

From the blog mentioned above.

"I got an email saying I have until May 25, 2018 to opt out of SmugMug’s Terms of Service and then my Flickr account will be governed by them. Explain please?
As part of the acquisition, all Flickr accounts will move to SmugMug’s Terms of service

From what I can gather, from reading Flickr Forums, as well as the Blog on the merger, free accounts will remain free, as Flickr will remain Flickr, as SmugMug love what Flickr does.

There are Two things that are changing, at this point;

1. Yahoo/Oath no longer own Flickr, SmugMug do. Therefore, Flickr users will be governed by the Term of Service and Privacy Policies of SmugMug and this will occur as of the 25th of May 2018. If you don't want to be governed by the above mentioned then you can delete your Flickr account.

2. The Flickr & SmugMug users will remain on separate platforms. That is if you have a Flickr account you are a Flickr user, and if you have a SmugMug account you are a SmugMug user. If you have an account from both platforms, you have an account from both platforms and they will not be merged into One.

I am a long-term Flickr, since around 2004, but when Yahoo took over at the end of 2009, all of my photos were deleted, as I had under Fifty photos on my page, mind you some of those were of RL301 still in bare metal being taken for a test run. Since being deleted and having my counter restarted to January 2010, I now have just under 50,000 on my free Flickr page, I don't believe that I need to move to Flickr Pro since really I am just a photo hack, who takes record shots.

Yes, that's how I read it too....two platforms, all stays as is.

I just worry that those Flickr T&C's might get changed at sometime to introduce charging.

I do hope you have a backup copy of those 50,000 photos somewhere Jack. .......just in case.

This will have some impacts on the railcams.  I will need to look carefully as I want to retain the images and video.  Thanks for the heads up.

Better than the Photobucket extortion though.

Free Account limited to 1000 Images/Videos from 8 January 2009.

So, it looks like reduce to below 1000 by then or pay USD4.17 per month for Pro which has unlimited storage.

Those who pay Microsoft for Office 365 should remember that they give you 1TB of OneDrive for Free, though sharing is a bit messy.

I might reduce my Flickr to just what is shared as OneDrive is already my primary backup.

What happens to the other images?  Do they delete and just provide access to the 1000 most recent images?

It's in the Blog. Essentially no uploads while over 1000, and over time the accounts will have content deleted, starting with the oldest.

eet the new limit.

Is there a way I can download all of my Flickr photos in one go?

I have found Flickr to be a good storage place for my photos over the last ten years between changes of computer etc.

I just need to find a way of getting all of my photos off Flickr
