Are they realigning the SG mainline to the other side of the BG, as per a plan that was presented earlier this year ?

Definitely some activity at Ararat, and up and down the Ballarat line. Good to see so many people and machines working, getting things in place for the shut.
TOQ-1

As I watch out my lounge room window through the rain, the heavy machinery is getting ready to put in a culvert for the new Ballan loop. Yesterday the line was cut in a few places where the culverts were being installed between Ballan station and the down end of the Ballan loop adjacent to Bostock reservoir.

What's going to happen with that narrow road underpass at the up end of Ballan Station ?

Just construction of a second bridge span. or Is the whole lot going to be rebuilt (two lane, Increased clearance etc)

I was going to cycle down and take a look this afternoon, but it's raining now. If the weather is clearer tomorrow I'll have a look after work and try to get some clearer photos. These ones this morning were taken in a rush from the coach window as we went past.

That subway (Stead Street)is closed to traffic at this time.

I think some new abutments for a bridge where the old goods line/bridge hump used to be will have to be installed and the old abutments ripped out and replaced.

It's been too damp to bother going up and looking today. Tomorrow morning I'll walk past and have a look before catching the bustitution.

No it is understood the original concept for a standard connection prepared some years ago is being out in as it does not involve moving either the existing sg or bg mainlines.  A second mixed gauge diamond goes in just on the Down side of the lx on the bg leg . The line from Maryborough enters at Grano St withe the connection into the yard as is, but a new straight line across the old loco depot site crosses the bg via the new mixed gauge diamond then links into the sg mainline by a standard sg turnout .
Supposed to be all signalled and commissioned early in 2019 according to the grapevine .

There were two bg tracks previously over the rail over road underpass at the Up end of Ballan . (Second track was previously an Up end extension of No. 4 Road)  https://www.victorianrailways.net/signaling/completedia/ballanbox45.html

The existing abutments are in sound condition and it appears that a new replacement span will be inserted with ballasted deck for the loop line .

The diamond has been installed on the SG line, with the BG yet to be connected. Wasn't able to get a good shot of it from Alfred St, and obviously I didn't want to walk along the line to try and get one.

Would old abutments be suitable for a second mainline track, as It was previously used as a siding ramp (their at a higher level)

According to Kuldalai, the old abutments are sound, however they will need a few inches shaved off the top.

I had a good look at these abutments this afternoon.

Severe cracking on the eastern side abutment where I can see daylight through AND the tops of the abutments have had about 18" of concrete added over the years.

I wouldn't have thought that old fashioned concrete over even older concrete would pass muster for a line that will eventually form apart of a high speed line.

I mean, these Victorian era bridge abutments weren't exactly built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel...and it shows.

The Moorabool Viaduct was (designed). Mind you it had to be ‘strengthened’.

Photo taken from Alfred Street Ararat back on 17 September - SG on left, BG at Right. So this new diamond crosses the BG between the diverge and the LX with the SG points to be just on the down side of the LX I gather?

TOQ-1
No the new mixed gauge diamond has been istalled in the BROAD gauge track just on the Down side of the Albert St level crossing. So currently the new diamond is only being used by bg trains . The sg legs are currently just short dead ends .

NB: The plan has changed to an old concept prepared many years ago .

The sg line from Maryborough will split just on the Up side of the Grano St level crossing with a new sg turnout going in there sometime in the next week or so. Diverge right onto existing track into Ararat Yard, straight ahead onto new sg track across already prepared earthworks to cross the bg line on the new mixed gauge diamond just on the Down side of Alfred St, then continues and will join into the sg mainline towards Maroona with a new sg turnout to be installed over Christmas / New Year allegedly .  Whole thing to be fully signalled and commissioning rumoured as February - but not sure which year !!!

So coming from Ballarat on the bg one will cross the sg line from Maryborough just on the Down side of the Albert St level crossing, and then cross the sg Adelaide mainline via the existing mixed gauge diamond at the Up end of Ararat station .

Assuming this photo is taken from the roadway at the Albert St level crossing looking in a down direction, then the new mixed gauge diamond has gone in recently on the bg track on the straight section just on the down side of the Albert st level crossing .

Now in the triangular section between the sg Adelaide mainline and the broad gauge one can observe a straight section of sg track and that is where we can expect a sg righthand turnout to go facing Down sg trains . The straight will be to Adelaide and the diverge towards Maryborough .

There are five main elements to this job :

1. Turnout at Grano St straight towards Maroona and diverge right into Ararat Yard allegedly goes in before Christmas 2018.
2. New mixed gauge diamond in bg track just on Down side of Alfred St, installed last weekend .
3. New sg mainline turnout in sg Adelaide mainline on Down side Western Highway lx, rumoured to go in between Christmas and New Year.2018/2019 .
4. New sg trackage between Grano St and Adelaide mainline . Earthworks are largely complete, not clear why VLP has nor put down the sleepers and track already over the last 12 months .
5 . Signalling of the above arrangement , supposed to be complete by February but not sure which year   !!! Remembering this connection is nearly 12 months late already .

...no...the 7:12 Bacchus silly...Razz

This morning, on the UP from Ballan station to the start of the new Ballan loop, 80Km/h limit and also around the Cobblebank station site. However the few minutes lost were easily made up by a great path from Deer Park west and an on-time arrival at SCS.

Is the new stabling in use? Looks like the old yard at Bacchus has a nice big hole in it now.

No, Bacchus Marsh yard is still in use. Went past tonight and there were 2 H sets, 2 N class locos and pair of conjoined Vlocities stabled in the old yard. At a guess there would be another H set and N class loco that hadn't yet arrived that would be stabled there by now and the 2 N class locos would have departed L/E for Melbourne.

Also, the works at the level crossing at Ferris Rd (Cobblebank) are complete, the original line has been removed and the line has been re-aligned. Both platform faces have been built and there are 2 complete tracks running through the future Cobblebank station.
