I’ll be in Melbourne first week in January and just wondered if anyone has any current loco diagrams for the N’s & P’s. I hoped that A66 might have still been spinning but understand it’s now stored. Wouldn’t mind going for a ride if I can fit it in.

Last time I was there there was a morning departure from Southern Cross that ran though Flinders St, can’t remember for the life of me what service it was but it made a nice photograph taken from across the Yarra.

Vline's P class is essentially withdrawn and stored, though some units are hired out to Steamrail. P20 still can be seen on Pacific National services on occasion. One is used as a standard gauge shunter by Vline at spencers street (P13)

Not all Bairnsdale services are velocity's

There was a N Class and 3 carriages at Bairnsdale station last Sunday

First Up and Last Down every day.

The Up Bairnsdale timetabled to cross the Flinders Street viaduct about 9:50am M-F, 10am Sa and 11.25am Su but buses replacing Traralgon and Bairnsdale trains until 13 Jan inclusive.

Sadly V/Line has discounted the Bairnsdale service to commuter status.

Train diagrams (rosters) can be discerned from the VLine WWTs but locos can't. The WWT does show the class of loco working the train and the type of train intended to be used. This is often altered for various reasons. It's been a while since I had need of this information so I'm not sure of the web site and string needed.

Actually if you look at the Traralgon/Bairnsdale line you'd know that there is a lot of between town traffic.

Also what the f are you on about.

If you want to ride behind an N class and see other N class locos plying their trade all without riding too far from Melbourne, Bacchus Marsh still gets 3 or 4 N class hauled trains each peak hour. These include the following:

Departing Southern Cross (PM peak)
1610
1635*
1719
1759

Departing Bacchus Marsh (AM peak)
0606
0621
0634
0731*

*This train only runs in service between Southern Cross and Melton, then runs empty cars direct into the yard at Bacchus Marsh to stable overnight. Then in the morning it returns to Melton empty cars again before returning in service back to Southern Cross. This is all due to pathing restrictions in place along the single track line.

Of course, lately it is not unheard of for one or more of these trains to be substituted for a Vlocity or cancelled all together.


While 'The Marsh' isn't quite the hive of loco hauled activity it was only 4 or 5 years ago, There aren't many other places in Victoria (apart from Southern Cross obviously) where you can see 3 or 4 loco hauled trains come in and shunt into the yards within 90 minutes all while express trains fly by on their way to Ballarat.

If you do plan to head down there though, make sure to check for closures, as with the line being upgraded there are likely to be several shutdowns in the coming months, that said, don't wait too long to see what I have described, as the Bacchus Marsh yards aren't longed for this world. Bacchus Marsh Yard will probably be decommissioned before April when the new Maddingley depot becomes operational.

All Shepparton, Swan Hill, Warrnambool, Albury and the Evening Down/Morning Up Bairnsdale are scheduled for N Sets.

As Gman said there are 4 peak hour runs with H sets on the Western line along with following on the Geelong Line:

-1805 Geelong - N Set (this has been a H set the couple of times I have used it since the August timetable change)
-1818 Geelong - H set
-1925 South Geelong - H Set

Looking at the timetables there is also the 2150 Seymour (returning at 0657 the next morning) with an N set.

The best time to see loco-hauled trains at SCS is from just before 6pm as the following depart in the space of half an hour:

-1759 Bacchus Marsh
-1802 Albury
-1805 Geelong
-1818 Geelong
-1825 Swan Hill
