Just curious, which other 2 cars are being looked at to bump F1 up to 6 cars? I think the HET website mentioned something about T4554. I take it the 6th one will be a motor car?

I actually saw on the Sydney Trains facebook page F1 was used by "Santa" to bring gifts to kids for the Westmead Children's Hospital, a nice gesture. I could totally see the Parcel Van fulfilling that duty one day - Santa's Parcels for Christmas Very Happy

I think the Van has the slightly better chance myself, since both ST and THNSW have shown interest in using it and it last ran in 2002 and has Mitsi switches under it whereas 7485's last outing was ten years' prior and has Metro Vick (for which we have limited spares and those we do have are needed for 3218). Both have floor rust problems although some of the Van's floor has now been cut out. IMO the Van would also serve well as a spare terminal car. THNSW want to use it as a shop during Heritage Expo instead of having to hire in rostra.

When I was at Central on the ETR in the 70's the Penrith Paper train that ran M-F mornings at around 0315 Departure IIRC, had a double Parcel van on the front with 2 general passenger cars bringing up the rear in a basic 4 car set arrangement.  On that score not an impossible option to see again with a PV being used as a power car and carrying break down spares in it if used on a general run set.

I saw an update on the HET website some months back about them hooking up the cars at the Paint Shop to the shed air compressor to run brake tests on all the cars in the collection there, including the fact that the U boats needed the most work due to some defective and missing parts - according to info most of the U boat cars in your collection were withdrawn late 1994/early 1995 and were no doubt scabbed for parts as spares while the others ran until late 1996. The brake tests all make sense now given the plan to move all the rolling stock out of there and into Chullora.

The plan for the parcel van is interesting. The fact that you can't travel these days with the doors open given the strict regulations in place now means that there won't quite be that appeal to be a passenger on them as before, given that there aren't the seats/windows to look out from, but I always thought it could make for an interesting mobile information kiosk/shop/mini museum for the history of the reds and electric trains or some kind of combination of the 3 with it being able to come into Sydney Terminal attached to the rest of F1 for the expo, allowing people to watch a live de-coupling with car being able to idle near the concourse somewhere and be open for inspection while the rest of F1 can run it's shuttles. I know that the Valley Heights Museum has got ETB 6039 as a "theatre" of sorts with 1 or 2 screens setup inside.

The U Boats will need a full rebuild, all moving parts in these will need to be broken down and remade. Yes putting the air through all of the cars at Redfern is fairly common so as to ensure they are at least able to be moved when required. Note the HET U Boats are complete with all parts except for 5035.

Up to now it's been considered that the U Boats will also need a full rewire as they are rubber. However depending on the success of the treatments given to W3 we may instead end up sleeving it instead of rewiring it. Whatever happens, it won't start until after the move to Chullora.

IMO the Parcel van represents the best option for a third terminal car for F1. There's only enough budget for one more terminal car (the ICE radio alone costs $30k+, the speedo, vigi, GPS & Data logger another $30k..). Although I'll admit they're now talking about ripping all the stuff off an S Set to use on W3 instead of buying new and retaining enough radio and logger bits off scrapped S Sets to eventually equip the U Boat as well.

The costs of all this stuff are phenomenal. You don't even want to know how much it's costing to sort the 3218 problem out and I'm not going to say, but it's well in to five figures (the highest quote was in six).

Yes Broadmeadow will be first, followed by the LES and then the electrics from HET. It is estimated that we still have 3~4 years at the Paint shop before the move.

Basically they need to build an entirely new yard and track system at the site extending in to the shed which will take years.

Not exactly Chullora Hub related but it is THNSW related. They have re-launched their website - now updated - to include provide a more centralized location for all heritage rail events in the state. This is a very positive move and now much easier for some of the smaller/lesser known group to get exposure to events.

They've also listed many (most?) of the rail heritage groups in NSW. Interesting that SETS has also been included, but a positive if all works out, as they are the only other group where you'd ever see operable heritage electric trains, will be interesting to see who crews them though and if they are somehow run via THNSW.

Yes very positive stuff. Been in the works for a long time and finally happened.

SETS is there because Ben Parker has been talking to THNSW. They've signed up for associate THNSW membership and as such they are now listed. SETS have indicated to THNSW that electric locomotive 8606 is available for heritage use (operated by PN) and may be used as a Sydney end loco (replacing a hired diesel on the other end of a steam shuttle) at the next TH Expo.

I myself would love to see an electric loco used in this way, it would add yet another dimension to TH Expo operations and work beautifully alongside F1's operations.

SETS however have shown little interest in operating in the EMU space which is somewhat dominated now by the THNSW/HET/ST trilogy.

Ultimately it looks like SETS will focus on operable electric locomotives while HET will continue their focus on EMU's (having clearly stated they are not interested in electric locos).

Last I heard, 8606 was on a jaunt to Port Kembla for traction motor attention.

Hopefully it all works out, it's great to see more of these groups brought to the table. When 623/723 is finished it will also be a positive for tours in the west, particularly to Kandos and Rylstone and could give LSMR a presence at a future TH Expo. From what I recall, while they still had 661/726 the tours they ran were well patronized, including the Vivid Express, which in the future they could run as a special train to pick people up from Rylstone and Kandos and other locations along the way and bring them into Sydney and then back.

I think it makes sense that they have the focus on the electric locos as the 86's in particular can still be used for some commercial duties when they come up, in particular tunnel or underground work which helps them to earn their keep, as well as heritage runs in between. I suppose in that way 8501 could probably also qualify for similar use. The 46's in their collection are probably the ones that would particularly be the most popular for heritage runs. The 46's and the Blue Mountains go together like bread and butter. I could totally see a 46 hauling the THNSW Hydro Majestic Express to Medlow Bath (instead of the CF class they've been using), which runs a couple of times a year and to Zig Zag when it re-open. Assists for steam locos with any of the electrics would also be great. If it is within the realm of possibly that something could be done for 4627 and if it would be allowed, it would be pretty cool if something could one day be organised through PN to have an anniversary run of the IP hauled by 2 46 class electrics within the wires.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to restore/re-activate an electric loco compared to say a 4-car U boat but even if the U boat (or other emu) cars never run again, at least they survived scrap or being turned into chicken coups on some farm somewhere. The 2 U boat cars at Lithgow were probably quite a popular attraction at the Junee Roundhouse and at the very least hopefully, something could be done where they could be seen by the public again and away from being left to the mercy of those with spray cans. Apart from ETB6039 at Valley Heights it's rare to get a chance to see inside and walk through a U boat.

In terms of 8606, that would be something new and special if it can turn up to the TH Expo and sometime probably at least 1.5 weeks ago someone posted a photo of it back at Enfield.

Yeh actually this is a common plan - to use the red set to carry people to the extremities of the network and have other groups take over a trip from there in order to save the group coming into sydney and also to give the punters a more authentic experience using multiple trains.

Watch this space.

The main limitation we have atm is lack of cars meaning that not enough passengers can be carried for a trip to be viable.

The latest trip (to Loftus) with F1 is already sold out three weeks beforehand - at $50 per head - simply because we still only have a three car set.

To have trips that sell out in advance are very good "problems" to hear about to those who put the work into maintaining/restoring the cars/trains as well as those high up.

I think also engaging with councils or major groups that hold celebrations to mark special events, who may welcome the idea of running heritage trains (or bus, etc) is good and quite clearly already happening, like with the Hunter Valley Steamfest and the 150th celebrations at Goulburn which has been planned. Don't know if the Central Coast Council has anything planned for the 60 years since electrification celebration in January 2020. Nice trip up that way, I think it just falls within School Holidays too.

Didn't see it earlier but they updated their website. No idea exactly what the fault means, but may be of interest

8606 was scheduled to haul the Robel Rail train again from the 25th February on the City Inner. However the loco suffered an interpole fault on its number 1 traction motor. The loco was first taken to Delec for examination and then to LMC Port Kembla for removal of this traction motor. The motor then received a full overhaul, including all necesary repairs. Following its reinstallation, 8606 was successfully tested on the 12th April.

It's now been more than a year since the last news on the heritage hub and recently THNSW published this in their board wrap up for March

The Board was briefed on progress with the Heritage Hub. The next step will be engaging architectural services to prepare the detailed scope of work for Stage 1 upgrading the Tank Annex for rolling stock storage. Work is also progressing on the planned movement of four items of rolling stock from Broadmeadow and two items of rolling stock from the Paint Shop at North Eveleigh which are being used as test cases with respect to moving all rolling stock out of these locations.

Thanks for the clarification on 7100 and 7350, the pictures I saw of 7100 gave the impression that it was largely complete

7100 (or 4501) was built using suburban single decker components that were on hand in the fifties, so when it was taken out of service, it was stripped to keep single deckers going back in the seventies.

The TOC wavier is for 2 separate trains (I did not think this was allowed), the HS and the LFX from Broadmeadow to Thirlmere and the FS from Goulburn to Thirlmere

The way that TOC wavers are currently being done this does not surprise me.

They are riddled with poor grammar, irregularities, contradictions and inconsistent advice.  It seems there is no proper internal review process before they are listed.

It really comes down to the competence of the operating organisation to make sense of these, and make the operation safe and sensible.

The first item has been moved to Chullora, carriage BAM 1 was moved by road from Broadmeadow to Chullora recently.

Chullora Heritage Hub
The Board congratulated everyone involved in the relocation of BAM 1 from Broadmeadow to Chullora by road. This is the first item of rolling stock to be relocated to Chullora and although not in its final location – the Tank Annex, as that is not yet ready, it was an important test and trial for the movement of those items of rolling stock that will need to be transported by road. Further work continues on preparing for the movement of other items of rolling stock from Broadmeadow by rail and road, expected to begin before the end of the year.
