Rail Revival Study: Geelong - Ballarat - Bendigo

The bus timetable has to improve to at least hourly to do that...then...years down the track the train could become an option to discuss.
The Vinelander

Spot on Mike - let’s prove a regular service can work before we start to ponder how many millions we can blow on making it a choo choo.

Hasn't happened with the Ballarat - Maryborough rail service !

Still not much more than an empty car movement.

Maryborough - Ballarat is growing, however slowly.

A good comparitor, Echuca - Bendigo is very popular so it's difficult to work out the reasons why, except perhaps that Echuca's population is around 5,000 more than Maryborough.

Oh dear, you've pressed the Vinelander button!

As you're always reminding us Mike, state borders don't affect how people travel, so if we consider Echuca/Moama as a single settlement - which it is - that's 20,000, a population base nearly three times greater than Maryborough.

Nevertheless, I'm sure the Clunes suburban service will have a drastic impact on patronage there. Laughing

Settle down PIMM...lest I throw another Mildura report at you... Smile

Actually Clunes is very busy sometimes.

Last year when I went to Talbot for the day...as one does on the Booktown weekend, I counted at least 50 pax that joined my special train at Clunes.

For "sometimes" read "once a year."
After, ". . . 50 pax that joined my special train at Clunes" add " I wonder how many would join a train at Clunes if there wasn't a special event taking place."

and.. special trains are great for special events. The availability of a track to service them is a bonus to be treasured.
That's no way the same as a regular service.

Maryborough has 2 trains in each direction per day. It has 3 daily coaches, but these go to Castlemaine, not Ballarat (there are Ballarat direct coaches but these run very early in the morning or late at night, or only run some days).

If you are looking to go to Ballarat for the day, it becomes a full day trip.

Ararat - Ballarat seems to get quite a bit of local travel, the reason being you can make a return trip just for the morning or afternoon, whether by coach or train. Maryborough and Echuca don't have the same luxury. Frequency is Freedom!

It's a shame single car Sprinters are not available. Then maybe could justify double the Maryborough frequency.
A 3 car V/Lo is a waste for under 10 pax per trip.

Because there are two Return trains per day
Increasing frequency and having the Geelong-Ballarat-Maryborough Line Run Every Hour will make them come
Frequency is freedom as @TOQ-1 said quite rightly

I wasn't saying increase the trains just yet. Have an additional coach during the day and see what happens there first.

good idea but beware of unintended consequences.
It could be taken as an excuse to replace rail with bus - some others would say an even better outcome.

I can just hear them, "Oh goody; there's a train every hour. We'll get the 10 o'clock, Fred and Gladys will be on the 12 o"clock, and Bert and Ernie on the 1 o'clock."
They'll come if they need to get somewhere; not because there's a train every hour.

Sesame Street having openly gay muppets will happen sooner than the reopening of the Geelong - Ballarat line to passengers.
