    News article: Labor will tear up the brand new Sydney Light Rail ‘if it’s a scourge’

    The state opposition leader has admitted tearing up the brand new Sydney light rail is an option if he’s elected.

    Why would the ALP do that as the network will be mostly built by the NSW election?

    What you might do is stop the build or park it for now pending the outcome of the litigation?

    This is why Labor will lose. Regardless of how much people hate the libs they are still getting stuff built. You can't blot there record on delivery aside from the light rail and it is still getting finished even with the litigation.

    All the track is pretty much down and the overhead is going up in more places and the lrv's are testing. Construction hoardings are starting to come down or minimised along a significant part of the route.

    Metro north west is testing, metro cbd is under construction and west connex is moving ahead at pace and it's cost estimates are not over budget like some keep claiming but an expansion of the scope of westconnex. Waratah B sets are running on the network and more S sets are coming off and the first of the new intercity fleet will be here soon.

    The net result of building freeways is to create congestion, so quite appropriate.

    The union guys paid to rip up or remove it did the best. They left a section in front of his house with tram rails exposed and now they are heritage listed.

    As for the naming, Campbell Newman wasn't exactly a PT lover!

    The ALP would know better than to make such comments in any case - after their pledges to remove tolls from the M4 and M5 a decade or 2 back were found to be a rather costly (contract clauses) after they got into office and found out what it would cost them.

    To correct the record, the knighthood was bestowed on the crooked Commissioner Lewis, by Joh the Nats. Not the ALP.

    Seems to be a thing for the Libs, look at Tony A reintroducing it.

    In the 80s most of the crooks came from Joh's cabinet.

    In the 90s we were afflicted with Gordon Nutall (ALP) and another (Name escapes me).

    Just shows every state has them irrespective of party line.

    I think NSW is by far the champion state on political corruption. Hence the move to water down ICAC as it has taken both LNP and ALP scalps.

    The sooner that we get a similar vehicle (like the ICAC/CCC etc) in the Commonwealth Parliament the better.

    It is a shame that these B@stards undo the work that their constituents, and irrespective of the politics, that most of the elected reps want to do.

    As to Clem Jones, it was a disgrace closing the tram network, just like the State (Nats/Libs) ripping up the Gold Coast line. They closed many lines which was understandable but the Gold Coast was a backward step. The Closure of the tram network was a backward step. Yes it could have been trimmed, but total closure for the inner city was not good.


    Why Brisbane liked Clem Jones and is seen as a progressive leader, is that he pushed for sewerage schemes that got rid of the backyard dunny. The Public loved it and forgave the other poor decisions.

    In the end people are remembered for the package and yes most Pollies (or all) will do stupid things at tax payers expense. But in the end they will be remembered if they were effective in bringing in change that had a positive outcome ( eg Hawke and IR and Howard for Gun control) and if they build things that what us mere slaves want. Hence they think anything that has a ribbon cutting exercise is gold, when we like to think that there was some thought for it. Sadly, often it is not the case these days. That is why Utopia (TV Show) is almost like a documentary.

    Sorry end of rant.

    No, not quite .....

    It is a TUNNEL and it is not FREE but a tollway, at only 80kph, and filled with speed cameras. For the low speed and the travel cost, it is really not a viable daily travel option unless you are a company and can offset the costs as expenditure - then there is the strong possibility of 'extra costs' if you don't keep your foot on the brake pedal all the way down to the bottom !
